Well, this is plain wrong. The shortest route and the one taken by flights is through the north pole. Technically, depending where you leave from and where your arrival point is, it can be considered going east or west (but in that case it really should be westish). The important point is that you go nowhere near Europe, which as far as the setting is concerned is better. You just go north.
