at least for west point it's a military college. so you go to school with the intention of going into military for a certain period of time. tuitions are waived and you get a higher ranking in the military after graduating.
Yet here he was, stuck in the Middle East, engaging in a construction project in a country the U.S Military had already declared its full withdrawal date, which was only a month away. Another op dad that comes out of nowhere. I usually like these types but it feels like it's written by someone that doesn't understand American culture too much or something. by just changing the city names or locations it would make it a bit more relatable to someplace that's unknown to the American readers, rather that making trying to make it fit and becoming unrelatable.

The Barrens were the empty and destroyed lands that nobody was living in. You would only find roaches or rats, or mutated animals that were hungry enough to attack anything there. The only people who took the post as guards along these long roads leading from cities were people that had nothing in life and were offered an olive branch from the government - beauu3yrCommented
