I wouldn’t say this is unrealistic of her friend to try and give MC more time with RN. The narrator did emphasize that RN won over all her close people to the point that even her feel overly blessed. This is the flipside of stockholm syndrome of a battered wife - without being battered. As the lynch pin on this relationship, it also doesn’t feel weird that MC is getting subconscious hints. It’s probably emotional abuse she is feeling.
