Surprise doesn't seem necessary unless it's an ambush. A bear trap won't stop being a trap just because you see it. Though in another context I believe the target not being aware part is essential to one being a trap. If you know, you know. If you don't know let's keep it that way, but if you find out? I'm not sure what to think about the story at this point. Normally, I'd be rooting for the MC and those close to him to succeed, but now it feels like I want everyone to fail ._. I personally would have preferred a route where Jyorta wasn't completely gone and at least the sister was human, maybe managing to give her brother some degree of control while not actually defeating the MC. Get a nice Shinichi/Migi (Parasyte: The Maxim) vibe going
