You really can't one shot kill. You'll learn later. Generally, you have to be ridiculously op or have to kind of exhaust the opponents energy as it can be used to heal deadly wounds easily. ofc, this is strictly limited to this book. At least the logic remains generally consistent throughout.
In life and death battles, defense was also important. When encountering an expert more powerful than one's self, one might reach the point of only being able to defend and not attack. If one's defense was strong, then perhaps one might still live. I hope to not come off as rude, but please read about sonic booms. You can't just not have sonic boom, moreover, sonic booms are continuously produced whenever an object goes faster than Mach 1.

I wonder if Pokemon have affinities to certain moves. Example: Alakazam improves on teleport faster than Xatu If all else including psychic mastery is the exactly same.

Couldn't a nearby gym leader or anyone just teleport over and curb stomp the tide? I would assume the league would have emergency personnel ready to be teleported and the required Pokemon in case of a tide. It's not like moving a champion trainer for one day to easily deal with the tide would effect anything. Heck you only needed a single Ace trainer in this case to easily resolve the tide. Does a town really not have the services of any Ace trainer and/or league doesn't have any ready to teleport for emergencies? I find this a little unrealistic.

Definition of discrimination implies different treatment, including based on looks. Therefore it is discrimination, and it's not exactly minor either. Nothing against the story, just letting you know.
