What you have written so far just seems super rushed and forced. The MC had, for all we know, WEEKS of forewarning that Poseidon was gonna throw some divine punishment at the MC and Polyphemus for leaving the island. It seems like the warning just went in one ear and out the other. It's like being warned not to wander up a mountain alone at night cause there are bears up there and then being surprised and pissed that a bear decides to maul you on your midnight stroll up the mountain. The emotional death scene is ok out of context, but when you add all of the build up to it, it just comes across as cringe and unearned. Like it's sad your friend got killed by Poseidon, but you literally badmouthed a GREEK GOD to his FACE after ignoring a direct order from him! What did you think was going to happen? TLDR: MC's dumb decisions undermine any investment I could have had in his character.
