The closer you are to stars or other celestial bodies that give off energy or even gases that are undergoing exothermic reactions such as contractions, the warmer it'll be. The further you are from matter and it's vibrations such as the void between galaxies or gasses and the like undergoing endothermic reactions such as expansion, the colder it'll be. So yes, space is cold.... as long as you're away from things giving off heat.
