What's the point of killing your enemy at the cost of pyrrhic victory or what's the point of killing your enemy while exhausting yourself, etc. Killing is hard period, so it is often easier to harm (just enough to make them weak enough to no longer be a threat) than to outright kill them. As the saying goes "cornered beast bite the hardest" knowing you are in for the kill, you will get yourself the strongest resistant.

the crab is pretty much half dead when he fought it which is why it can't eat the giant shark corpse with other crabs since other crabs just going to eat it as well
