I wonder whether that marriage portion would be enough to make a difference in the running of the barony.
This income should be enough for her to live in relative comfort for the rest of her life. If she were ever to remarry then she would be able to keep this income but she would need the permission of her late husband's heir or regent to marry. She would, however, have to move out of the castle but on the other hand, no one could force her to remarry. - Zenify3yrCommented
Huh an income generating asset as dowry rather than a cash amount. Makes sense.

He probably is rolling in it. A knight without land being able to afford such a retinue tipped me off.

He decided to wait until after the birth of the child before deciding how much of his funds to invest in the Barony. He had the funds to pay all the debits of course or so he thought but he wasn't willing to spend in all if it was someone else Barony, some but not all. - Zenify3yrCommented

He had previously been a page in the Earls household before becoming the squire of a knight who had gotten himself killed in a duel shortly thereafter, after being caught in the bed of someone else's wife. He had then squired for a knight who had fallen off his horse while hunting a month into his term of service. This was bad enough but he then started squiring for a knight who a week later died suddenly for no apparent reason.
