Showing liking for Yale is natural in Aizu's circumstances, what would be unnatural would be turning this into a serious relationship at their age, especially given that Yale isn't interested in that topic beyond books.

Yale will have a single partner at a later point, but is about at the half of the novel when that girl gets introduced and meet Yale. Not a centric point of the novel anyway. Aizu is disciplezoned by Yale quite quickly, he cares for her as a family member same as he does with other close friends/disciples, but no romantic feelings at all for his part.
