While some could make money as a side job, few would make a full scale business. This is due to the time difference. Remember the "real" world and the "game" world are on different time spans. Each time they log off for let's say 12 hours, they lose 3 or so days (don't remember exaxtly). So it's hard to have a full time job if your not always there.

This is why I'm suspicious of this universe being a game. Think of playing an MMO and your character gets suck and the devs don't/can't help. The devs seem to have too little control over the game.
This meant that as long as they were sealed by the Spacetime Amber, the players could not use their own specialties to escape by logging in and out. It would be like their accounts were frozen due to them using cheats; they would never be able to escape.
