It's not too long. It *seems* too long but I think that's mostly due to how short of a time you allowed for AoT/establishing arc. It set a precedent for short arcs and gave a bit of whiplash as Jon had just arrived from ASOIAF and as the reader is adjusting to that, you immediately threw him back in. Nothing particularly worth addressing now, but addressing the first Arc might be worth it in the future.
It's the problem with extremist political views on both sides. The pendulum of power and popularity swings so harshly that what originally started as something well reasoned to address a concern of the time quickly gets lost and then "this is how we do things" happens.
I get the feeling he knows and is just waiting to give an abject lesson in loyalty and upfront truth.
I think I love this explanation for why King's Cross station goes unnoticed more than any other. It fits so well with the sort of stereotypical British response of scurrying your children away from the weirdos but otherwise leaving it all to be someone else's problem.
