There were plenty of studies done in the early 1800's on the cost of housing/feeding slaves vs hiring farmhands and I think it pretty much came down to scale/time (not including Moral Arguments). Spending (in 1800) $400-$1200 to precure an initial slave that you also own the next generation of children of means that you don't need to continue paying farmhands who could quit at any time. The farmhands were usually only paid (in 1800) $1-$3 a day in comparison.
