I feel like you're an experienced reader. As such, you should realize that trying to bring any logic or reasoning to these novels is pointless. You really have to turn off part of your brain to enjoy it fully. Some people can do it, some people can't. It'll only hurt your further to try and make sense of anything.

I mean, as the reader we are not surprised, but you need to separate your thinking from the mc's. We have all the previous experience of reading novels, so we know what's coming. I don't believe the mc could have known she was a gold core, sure he could have guessed, but he would still be surprised when confirming. Gold is the highest we have seen so far, it is so beyond is natural realm of course he would be surprised.
