Wonderful choice.
He selected the first recording with care. Not something that announced itself — not the nineteenth century's grandest productions, nothing that arrived in a room like a statement. He wanted something that sounded like music of quality without sounding like music from anywhere specific, something that would register as extraordinary without registering as impossible. He settled on Satie: the first of the Gymnopédies, which had the quality of music that seemed to have always existed, that arrived without period or nationality, that simply was.
