Original Chinese text is 院试 (yuàn​shì) which is the last of the three entry-level exams in the imperial examination system of Ming and Qing dynasties. But if you enter this in google translate it comes out as college examination so I guess for translation this novel is probably first run trough translation software and then edited for readability. Better than just blindly running it through translation software but you lose a lot of context that a good translator would add.
