lol, you got the message wrong, afair, this novel is in a kinda medieval setting, and if we speak about medieval times, killing of the outsiders happended in many places. What you are speaking about is called nationalism, and it's common up everywhere. Just look at the Western mass media - what do you think people from the rest of the world think about it? Especially Russians, Arabs, Chinese, etc. Basically content makers (authors, directors, etc) from any country, even a small like South Korea and Japan want to please their audience and make themselves look great. If you dont't like a pinch of health (or sometimes unhealthy) nationalism - just constume content from your country
