Think of magic/aura/qi/energy as a bubble that you can create around yourself. The stronger you are, the bigger/tougher the bubble is. A formation/avatar would basically be a method to combine the bubble of multiple people together to create a massive version that just a single person can produce. Whether it’s form is a shield/spear/animal etc, would bring about a certain effect. So one person isn’t fighting, it’s each single attacking/defending action is displayed by 100,000 soldiers. Kind of like a choir or a sports stadium; when you get 20 people or 20,000 people singing or yelling at the same time, the atmosphere is more enriching than a single being. So while the book did a poor example of explaining the idea(I probably did as well). It’s basically a method of granting a supernatural effect to real life tactical war formations. I think a problem lots of stories have is the writers have read hundreds of cultivation novels, so when they write a term that is simple to them, they feel no need to extrapolate; this however doesn’t mean everyone will understand it. Anyways hoped this helped 😅

Pick up a sword, attack that tree. Pick up a bow, step back 20 paces, shoot that tree. The degree of perfection in each given perfection is drastically different. though, i agree that in systems like this, timing on manuals should be equalized. Plus 3 years of training is insane; something acceptable would be 1 month sword, 3 months bow. That way they have an understanding of the weapons being used but aren’t honed killers just from touching a book.
