If this is following the warlock world type rules but skipping the apprentice rank I’d guess most magi dont progress past rank 1, rank 2 are the elite fighting force and rank 3 are the top end in the “starter” zone.

Usually their bodies improve on the path so would their brains I would assume. Improved brain capacity isn’t any less realistic then improved strength or magic ability. This guy will probably improve his body in some way before he reaches the limits of a mortal mind.
