He blinked his little eyes towards his Aunt Gina who was sitting opposite them, her head rested loosely on her husband's shoulder while long curly hair ran down her delicate breast to rest on where her hand ran smoothly on her round belly. His Aunt Gina has been the last child of his Grandparents and the only girl his father and uncle Jared had. Stefan's eyes lingered on her until she caught him staring and gave him a sweet smile, Stefan smiled back while blinking his eyes away from her to have them fixed on his Grandparents who were two seats away from him, both of them sound asleep, seeking comfort in each other's warmth. Stefan smiled at them, been the first Grandchild has its benefits, they loved him to no end. Stefan's eyes searched for his father until he saw him pacing the theaters' door. His Father's expressions filled with worry for his younger brother whose wife was having a child. 

Stefan frowned, knowing his father was sad and so he wished to comfort him. He tapped his mother's side seeking the woman's attention. Vivian blinked sleepy eyes open to stare down at her son.  

"Pequeño," She smiled and brushed her fingers in Stefan's hair. "What is it, Sweetie?" She was surprised to find him still awake. She caught sight of the clock hanging on the wall, it read 10:45 pm.

"Can I go over to papá?" Stefan whined.

"No. You should sleep, baby." Vivian looked at her husband who was still pacing. She remembered it was Jared who paced that same door six years ago when she had Stefan. A weak smile crossed her thin lips. "Papá is waiting for your uncle and Auntie to bring out your new cousin." Stefan smiled.

"He is going to be a boy, right Mamá?"

"Yes Pequeño, he will be a boy." Stefan nodded, his eyes finally heavy. 

"Duerme bebé," Vivian stroke his curly hair and watch his eyes fall shut. 'Sleep baby' She soothed and Stefan fell into Dreamlands. He couldn't wait to have a baby brother. Stefan had always wanted to be a big brother. He fell asleep with a smile so wide his lips could have split in two, light snoring could be heard as the young boy slept.

Stefan's eyes shot up in time to see Sky standing at the foot of the stairs. Stefan's lips fell apart at the sight before him. Standing in all his glory was the beautiful, flawless, shirtless and sexy as all fuck, Sky. His eyes a perfect baby blue, the sparkles all gone yet they held Stefan captive.    Greengrass Manor's Garden, 

   It was just another morning spent in meditation for the young master of the Greengrass family. Every morning he would just sit in the same place he deemed most comfortable and spend the early morning in his meditation. When he first started doing it, he felt how hard it really was to empty your mind and achieve the state where he was one with nature. It took him a long time to get a hang of it.

   Joseph entered the garden with a coffee in one hand and a towel in the other. It was all part of his daily routine. He would always sit on the table, it had the most beautiful garden view, and drink his coffee while watching his son practice. When his coffee was over, he slowly walked in from of him and touched his head.

   Joseph did this for the past year, every day, to make sure his son is getting better. Dean was trying his best, so he could avoid the pain that comes from his father's mind attack. It wasn't pleasant, not at all. He would do anything to overcome this daily torture, it felt like someone was drilling inside his head to open up a gaping hole. 

   But, today was different. When Joseph's hand touched his son's head, instead of the familiar feeling of connecting someone's mind, all he could feel was emptiness. His legilimency just passed through him like there was no target for it to attack. Immediately there appeared a smile on his face, before it turned into a hearty laugh, which caused Dean to lose his concentration and wake up. 

   "Father?" He didn't know what happened, he was surprised he didn't finish his meditation with a headache, but with the loud laughter of his father.

   "My son, you passed. You finally achieved to become one with the nature. I couldn't touch your mind, actually, I couldn't even sense it." He was happy to see his son achieve the goal he set. "It seems like you won't be needing this towel here." He always had it ready for his son,  he would become full of sweat after every session of meditation.

   "Does that mean I can start the second stage of occlumency?" He raised his fists towards the sky in celebration. He was finally free from this arduous exercise.

   "Let's leave it for later, it's almost time for breakfast. Sit on the table while we wait for them to come." When the weather is nice, instead of the dining room, they would just have their breakfast outdoors. It was nice to have fresh air, beautiful view of the garden, and your family to share it with.

   Within the next half an hour, every member of the family made their way towards the garden to have breakfast. The atmosphere was amazing. Everyone was chatting while slowly enjoying the tasty food that was placed on the table. 

   Joseph and Oliver were talking about politics and the changes that came with the end of the wizarding war. Even though it's been peaceful for the past 5 years, the impact of the war was disastrous. 

   Casualties caused by war were extremely high. There were even some wizarding families that seized to exist. They lost every single of their members to the war. It wasn't like surviving ones didn't suffer. Thanks to the efforts of the head of the Greengrass family, Joseph, to stay neutral, their family didn't suffer like other families. Maybe they were just lucky, as staying neutral didn't necessarily mean survival.

   The other side of the table was quieter. Ladies of the family, Helen and Evelyn, were talking amongst themselves almost in a whispering voice. They didn't want their kids to hear what they were talking about. Because, currently they were talking about the blood borne curse that was placed on their Greengrass family ancestor, and how it affected Astoria's health. "Even though it affects every member of the family to some degree, it seems like Astoria contracted the full curse or she is just too fragile. It keeps bothering me, sister Helen." Evelyn was too depressed and sad about her daughter's condition. It pained her heart to see her daughter suffer.

   Astoria, not aware of her mother's worries, was currently busy harassing her big brother Dean to play with her. She just wanted to spend more time with Dean and Daphne, because, her condition didn't really allow her to accompany them all the time. She was determined to not waste even a second. 

   "Alright, alright. Don't pinch my arm like that. I will play with you as much as you like." Dean loved his little sister. When it comes to her precious play time, he couldn't really refuse. 'Huh, a blood-borne curse?' repeated in his mind.

   Stuffing her mouth with some more food, Daphne also followed after them.

Its life was nothing but misery. Since it's birth, it was forced to obey that wizard called Salazar. It didn't have any freedom or will to do as it wished. Not only him, but, it also had to obey his successors as well. Until the successor arrives, it was put to deep sleep.

   Once it was awakened from its sleep, it met the boy named Tom. Even though it had to obey his command to harm the people he targeted, those were the only times it was freed from its cage. Freedom didn't last long and it was again forced into its cage until it could be freed again.

   When it was awakened once more, it was delighted with the taste of freedom, until that old bastard came and ruined it all. 

   Dumbledore found the secret chamber and forced it to obey him as well. It was confused as to how someone that he didn't recognize as a successor could command it. Because it was sure that old guy wasn't the successor it had to obey, not at all. After that, it was forced to play along with the stage that old bastard prepared. It first lost its sight because of that old man's bird than killed by a little boy. If not forced to hold back, how could such a weakling be able to kill him? 

After it's death, the Basilisk was reborn as a human baby. Free from the chains that have been forced on it, it decided to rise to power so never again in its life it will be forced to obey others.

Two weeks after his woke up from the coma, James finally stay in this residence after his discharged from the hospital. Actually, he want to be discharged earlier but his family insisted that he has to be monitored until it was 200 % sure there's nothing wrong with him. Because of this he once again felt blessed by how he loved by his family, almost to the point of crying.

His father, Rupert Murdoch actually rarely stayed in the United States. As a media mogul and as a major shareholder of News Corporation he is still more focus in Australia and UK market, even though he already officially became a U.S citizen last year. As for his mother Anna Maria Murdoch was a former reporter for one of his father's subsidiary newspaper and then they got married in 1967. By their marriage born Elizabeth, Lachland, and James himself. Elizabeth was born in 1968, she will be 17 this year and going to college next year. His older brother, Lachland was born in 1971 and just one year older than him, he is still in high school right now. As for the not mention half-sister, Prudence Murdoch, he really not know much about her. He only knew she stayed in London and already work in Daily Mirror newspaper for so long. Ever since his childhood he rarely saw or communicated with this sister of him. Although The Murdoch family already have business in America such as New York Post and the behemoth 20th Century Fox film studio but because of Rupert Murdoch's focus and obsession this time concentrated in the expansion of his TV Network and in addition in the U.S side this time there are still strict regulations on national TV Network which forbid mergers with other media, Rupert Murdoch has no choice but to  focus more in Australia and U.K market and temporary neglect the development of his business here. Thinking about his father, James can't help but sighed.

" hah, If only my old man can realize how extreme the potential of movie industry will be, he maybe try to have more focus here. Well, it's fine anyway.  There is still me and my other memories to cope and "eat" everything here and it should be fun to see his expression on later days after he missed this big gold mine. How cheap was that for something that has billions of dollars potential years later. This can proof how short-sighted people can be. So I am confident I can win this asset with just 4 million USD. So, the next task is how to convince my old man to lend me that amount of money. He will almost likely beat me to death if suddenly I asked for 4 million USD not to mention 10 million USD. And even if my old man somehow agree, my age limit will prohibit me to participate in bid for this "gold mine". The next day Liu Shifu sat at his desk and stared at the paper Dunkin' Donuts napkin in his hand. Dominick Provenzano's beeper number was written in ballpoint pen on the napkin. But he needed the cyanide. Zhang Xiaohua and Cao Feifei were out there somewhere. They could get in a jam and start talking again. They would tell stories about him just to save themselves. They'd cut another deal with the state, agree to give up a bigger fish in exchange for dropped charges. They'd do it, no question.
That's why Shifu needed the cyanide, and he shouldn't wait on this. Dominick said he could get it.
Shifu picked up the phone and punched out Dominick's number. He waited for the tone that gave him the go-ahead to enter his own phone number into the system. After it sounded, he hesitated for a second, then punched out his number. He hung up the phone and waited.
A half hour later the phone rang. He stared at it and let it ring a few times. He didn't want to seem anxious. "Hello?"
"Hello. Shifu?"
"Yeah."
"Dom."
"How ya doing?"
"Good, good. Yourself?"
"I'm okay."
"What's up?"
He glanced down at his briefcase on the floor. "Remember what we were talking about yesterday? The stuff we were talking about? The white stuff?"
"Yeah?" Dominick sounded cautious.
"Is it okay to talk?"
"Yeah, don't worry about it. I'm at a pay phone. How about you?"
"I'm at home."
"Oh." Dominick sounded cautious again, and suspicious.
"Listen, I was wondering. How much of that stuff could you get?"
"How much do you need?"
"A lot."
"How much is that, Shifu? What're we talking about here?"
"Fifty."
''Sure, no problem." Dominick didn't hesitate.
"Let's get together and we'll figure out the when and where."
"Yeah, okay. Soon as I know my buyer is serious, we'll get together."
"What you mean, 'serious'. You never done business with this buyer before." Dominick sounded upset.
"No, I've worked with the guy before. He knows I don't like no bullshit, so he's always been straight with me. When he knows for sure he can put the cash together, he'll call me. Then I'll call you."
"Oh."
"No sense our wasting our time for nothing, right. I like sure bets."
"Of course." Dominick still sounded suspicious.
"So you can get it."
"I told you, no problem. My guy's good for it. All I need is two days' notice. Okay.''" Dominick seemed very confident of his source.
"Soon as I know my buyer's good for the money, I'll call you."
"Great. I'll give my guy a call to make sure he's got stuff coming in. But don't worry. This guy's never run dry on me before."
"Good."
"Okay, Shifu, you call me when you know something. I'll be talking to you—"
"How about that other stuff we talked about, Dom." Shifu picked up the Dunkin' Donuts napkin.
"What stuff?"
"The other stuff."
"Oh, the stuff for the rats?"
"Yeah."
'I'm working on it. I got a call in to someone. I'm waiting to hear from him."
Shifu crumpled the napkin. "Okay. I just wanted to make sure you didn't forget."
Dominick laughed. "My friend, when it comes to business, I don't forget."
Shifu smiled into the phone. "That's what I like to hear."
"Okay, if you want to do this big order, you call me. Soon as I know about the other stuff, I'll call you. Can I usually get you at this number? Three-eight-five—"
"Yeah. If I'm not here, the machine picks up."
"Okay then. I'll talk to you soon."
"Right. Take it easy, Dom."
Dominick hung up on his end. Shifu laid his receiver back on the cradle. He looked out the window at the backyard. Bullshit, he thought.
He picked up the phone and dialed the pay phone at "the store." It rang twice.
"Hello?"
"Is Lenny DePrima there.?"
"Yeah, he's here. Who's this?"
"Tell him it's Angel."
"Who?"
"Just tell him it's Angel. He'll know."
"'Angel? Okay."
He could hear the hubbub of "the store" coming through the line. Shifu picked up a pen, smoothed out the napkin, and drew a box around Dominick's phone number. There were very few people he trusted in the world. Lenny DePrima was one of them. Lenny had always played straight with him, no bullshit.
Someone finally came back to the phone. "Hello, Shifu?"
'Yeah."
''Hey, how's it going?"
''I don't know yet."
"Huh? What you mean?"
"This Dominick Provenzano—is he for real or what?"
"Sure, he's for real."
"How do you know?"
"Hey, Shifu, if he wasn't for real, do you think I'd send him to you?"
"Yeah, but how do you know he's for real? What do you know about him?"
"I know he's connected."
"Yeah, right. Everybody's connected these days."
"No, for real. I heard that from someone else. I sold Dominick some stuff myself. He's always been good for it with me. I never had any problems with the guy."
"So you think he's for real."
"Hey, his cash is green, and he keeps his promises. That's about as real as he needs to be as far as I'm concerned."
"Yeah...I guess so." He underlined Dominick's phone number a few times. "As long as his cash is green, that's all that counts."
DePrima laughed. "You can say that again, brother."
"All right, I just wanted to make sure before I got into anything with him."
"He's okay. Shifu. You don't have to worry about him."
"Tell me something. You hear anything about Shade lately." Shade was Zhang Xiaohua's nickname.
"What'you, kidding? He knows better than to come around here, the bastard. I hope he's got cancer, the fuck."
"Nobody's seen him?"
"Nah. State's got him in protective custody. You know that. He won't be coming around here no more. Not after what he did."
Zhang Xiaohua had worn a wire for the police and got a kid in his own gang to admit on tape that he took part in a house robbery where a man was killed. The cops were dying to lock up somebody for that murder, and the kid was good enough. Thanks to Zhang Xiaohua, he was serving a life sentence in Rahway now. Zhang Xiaohua would rat on his own mother, Shifu felt. As for Cao Feifei, she had helped Zhang Xiaohua try to trap her own cousin Li Xian into admitting to that murder, but Li Xian wouldn't talk about it. These two were inhuman. They'd turn in their own families. Liu Shifu knew he had to take care of them before they did any more damage.
"You still there. Shifu?"
"Yeah, I'm here."
"Listen, don't worry about Dom. He's okay. And listen."
"What?"
"If you find Shade, you let me know. I know a lotta people around here who'd love to pay him a visit. You know what I mean?"
"I know. Take it easy, Lenny."
"Yeah, you, too, Shifu."
He hung up the phone and swiveled his chair toward the window. Looking out through the Venetian blinds, he could see the two small concrete lions on the patio. He was thinking about Li Xian.
Zhang Xiaohua and Cao Feifei had to go to sleep the same way Li Xian had gone to sleep. Maybe not as messy as Li Xian had been, but he wanted them to go the same way. He ran the edge of his hand over the crumpled napkin on the desktop. That's why he needed the goddamn cyanide.

Arnold Alois Schwarzenegger was born on July 30, 1947 in Thal, Styria[10] to Aurelia (née Jadrny; 1922–1998) and Gustav Schwarzenegger (1907–1972). His father was the local chief of police and had served in World War II as a Hauptfeldwebel after voluntarily joining the Nazi Party in 1938.[11] He was wounded in the Battle of Stalingrad,[12] but was discharged in 1943 following a bout of malaria. He married Schwarzenegger's mother on October 20, 1945; he was 38 and she was 23. According to Arnold Schwarzenegger, his parents were very strict: "Back then in Austria it was a very different world ... if we did something bad or we disobeyed our parents, the rod was not spared."[13] He grew up in a Catholic family who attended Mass every Sunday.[14][15]

Gustav had a preference for his elder son, Meinhard, over Arnold.[16] His favoritism was "strong and blatant", which stemmed from unfounded suspicion that Arnold was not his biological child.[17] Schwarzenegger has said that his father had "no patience for listening or understanding your problems."[14] He had a good relationship with his mother and kept in touch with her until her death.[18] In later life, he commissioned the Simon Wiesenthal Center to research his father's wartime record, which came up with no evidence of Gustav being involved in atrocities, despite his membership in the Nazi Party and Sturmabteilung (SA).[16] Gustav's background received wide press attention during the 2003 California recall campaign.[19]

At school, Schwarzenegger was reportedly academically average, but stood out for his "cheerful, good-humored, and exuberant" character.[14] Money was a problem in their household; Schwarzenegger recalled that one of the highlights of his youth was when the family bought a refrigerator.[17] As a boy, he played several sports, heavily influenced by his father.[14] He picked up his first barbell in 1960, when his soccer coach took his team to a local gym.[10] At the age of 14, he chose bodybuilding over soccer as a career.[5][6] He later said, "I actually started weight training when I was 15, but I'd been participating in sports, like soccer, for years, so I felt that although I was slim, I was well-developed, at least enough so that I could start going to the gym and start olympic lifting."[13] However, his official website biography claims that "at 14, he started an intensive training program with Dan Farmer, studied psychology at 15 (to learn more about the power of mind over body) and at 17, officially started his competitive career."[20] During a speech in 2001, he said, "My own plan formed when I was 14 years old. My father had wanted me to be a police officer like he was. My mother wanted me to go to trade school."[21]

Schwarzenegger took to visiting a gym in Graz, where he also frequented the local movie theaters to see bodybuilding idols such as Reg Park, Steve Reeves, and Johnny Weissmuller on the big screen.[13] When Reeves died in 2000, Schwarzenegger fondly remembered him: "As a teenager, I grew up with Steve Reeves. His remarkable accomplishments allowed me a sense of what was possible when others around me didn't always understand my dreams. Steve Reeves has been part of everything I've ever been fortunate enough to achieve." In 1961, Schwarzenegger met former Mr. Austria Kurt Marnul, who invited him to train at the gym in Graz.[10] He was so dedicated as a youngster that he broke into the local gym on weekends, so that he could train even when it was closed. "It would make me sick to miss a workout... I knew I couldn't look at myself in the mirror the next morning if I didn't do it." When Schwarzenegger was asked about his first movie experience as a boy, he replied: "I was very young, but I remember my father taking me to the Austrian theaters and seeing some newsreels. Schwarzenegger's brother, Meinhard, died in a car crash on May 20, 1971.[10] He was driving drunk and died instantly. Schwarzenegger did not attend his funeral. Meinhard was engaged to Erika Knapp, and they had a three-year-old son named Patrick. Schwarzenegger paid for Patrick's education and helped him to move to the U.S.[17] Gustav died on December 13, 1972, from a stroke.[10] In Pumping Iron, Schwarzenegger claimed that he did not attend his father's funeral because he was training for a bodybuilding contest. Later, he and the film's producer said this story was taken from another bodybuilder to show the extremes some would go to for their sport and to make Schwarzenegger's image colder to create controversy for the film.[22] However, Barbara Baker, his first serious girlfriend, recalled that he informed her of his father's death without emotion and that he never spoke of his brother.[23] Over time, he has given at least three versions of why he was absent from his father's funeral.[17]

In an interview with Fortune in 2004, Schwarzenegger told how he suffered what "would now be called child abuse" at the hands of his father: "My hair was pulled. I was hit with belts. So was the kid next door. It was just the way it was. Many of the children I've seen were broken by their parents, which was the German-Austrian mentality. They didn't want to create an individual. It was all about conforming. I was one who did not conform, and whose will could not be broken. Therefore, I became a rebel. Every time I got hit, and every time someone said, 'You can't do this,' I said, 'This is not going to be for much longer because I'm going to move out of here. I want to be rich. I want to be somebody.'"[11]

Schwarzenegger served in the Austrian Army in 1965 to fulfill the one year of service required at the time of all 18-year-old Austrian males.[10][20] During his army service, he won the Junior Mr. Europe contest.[6] He went AWOL during basic training so he could take part in the competition and then spent a week in military prison: "Participating in the competition meant so much to me that I didn't carefully think through the consequences." He entered another bodybuilding contest in Graz, at Steirerhof Hotel, where he placed second. He was voted "best-built man of Europe", which made him famous in bodybuilding circles. "The Mr. Universe title was my ticket to America—the land of opportunity, where I could become a star and get rich."[21] Schwarzenegger made his first plane trip in 1966, attending the NABBA Mr. Universe competition in London.[20] He would come in second in the Mr. Universe competition, not having the muscle definition of American winner Chester Yorton.[20]

Charles "Wag" Bennett, one of the judges at the 1966 competition, was impressed with Schwarzenegger and he offered to coach him. As Schwarzenegger had little money, Bennett invited him to stay in his crowded family home above one of his two gyms in Forest Gate, London. Yorton's leg definition had been judged superior, and Schwarzenegger, under a training program devised by Bennett, concentrated on improving the muscle definition and power in his legs. Staying in the East End of London helped Schwarzenegger improve his rudimentary grasp of the English language.[24][25] Living with the Bennetts also changed him as a person: "Being with them made me so much more sophisticated. When you're the age I was then, you're always looking for approval, for love, for attention and also for guidance. At the time, I wasn't really aware of that. But now, looking back, I see that the Bennett family fulfilled all those needs. Especially my need to be the best in the world. To be recognized and to feel unique and special. They saw that I needed that care and attention and love."[26]

Also in 1966, while at Bennett's home, Schwarzenegger had the opportunity to meet childhood idol Reg Park, who became his friend and mentor.[26][27] The training paid off and, in 1967, Schwarzenegger won the title for the first time, becoming the youngest ever Mr. Universe at the age of 20.[20] He would go on to win the title a further three times.[6] Schwarzenegger then flew back to Munich, where he attended a business school and worked in a health club (Rolf Putziger's gym, where he worked and trained from 1966 to 1968), returning in 1968 to London to win his next Mr. Universe title.[20] He frequently told Roger C. Field, his English coach and friend in Munich at that time, "I'm going to become the greatest actor!"[28]

Schwarzenegger, who dreamed of moving to the U.S. since the age of 10, and saw bodybuilding as the avenue through which to do so,[29] realized his dream by moving to the United States in October 1968 at the age of 21, speaking little English.[6][10] There he trained at Gold's Gym in Venice, Los Angeles, California, under Joe Weider's supervision. From 1970 to 1974, one of Schwarzenegger's weight training partners was Ric Drasin, a professional wrestler who designed the original Gold's Gym logo in 1973.[30] Schwarzenegger also became good friends with professional wrestler Superstar Billy Graham. In 1970, at age 23, he captured his first Mr. Olympia title in New York, and would go on to win the title a total of seven times.[20]

The immigration law firm Siskind & Susser has stated that Schwarzenegger may have been an illegal immigrant at some point in the late 1960s or early 1970s because of violations in the terms of his visa.[31] LA Weekly would later say in 2002 that Schwarzenegger is the most famous immigrant in America, who "overcame a thick Austrian accent and transcended the unlikely background of bodybuilding to become the biggest movie star in the world in the 1990s".[29]

In 1977, Schwarzenegger's autobiography/weight-training guide Arnold: The Education of a Bodybuilder became a huge success.[10] In 1977 he posed for the gay magazine After Dark.[32][33] Due to taking an assortment of courses at Santa Monica College in California (including English classes), as well as further upper division classes at the University of California, Los Angeles as part of UCLA's extension program, Schwarzenegger had by then accumulated enough credits so as to be "within striking distance" of graduation. In 1979 he enrolled in the University of Wisconsin–Superior as a distance education student, completing most of his coursework by correspondence and flying out to Superior in order to meet professors and take final exams. In May 1980, he formally graduated and received his bachelor's degree in business administration and marketing. He got his United States citizenship in 1983.[34]

Schwarzenegger said that during this time he encountered a friend who told him he was teaching Transcendental Meditation (TM), which prompted Schwarzenegger to reveal that he had been struggling with anxiety for the first time in his life: "Even today, I still benefit from [the year of TM] because I don't merge and bring things together and see everything as one big problem."[35]

The past few days, he’d hardly slept. He’d eaten whatever he could scrounge—vending machine gummi bears, stale bagels, even a Jack in the
Crack burrito, which was a new personal low. His clothes were torn, burned, and splattered with monster slime.
He’d only survived this long because the two snake-haired-ladies—gorgons, they called themselves—couldn’t seem to kill him either. Their
claws didn’t cut his skin. Their teeth broke whenever they tried to bite him. But Percy couldn’t keep going much longer. Soon he’d collapse from
exhaustion, and then—as hard as he was to kill, he was pretty sure the gorgons would find a way.
Where to run?
He scanned his surroundings. Under different circumstances, he might’ve enjoyed the view. To his left, golden hills rolled inland, dotted with
lakes, woods, and a few herds of cows. To his right, the flatlands of Berkeley and Oakland marched west—a vast checkerboard of neighborhoods,
with several million people who probably did not want their morning interrupted by two monsters and a filthy demigod.
Farther west, San Francisco Bay glittered under a silvery haze. Past that, a wall of fog had swallowed most of San Francisco, leaving just the
tops of skyscrapers and the towers of the GoldenGate Bridge.
A vague sadness weighed on Percy’s chest. Something told him he’d been to San Francisco before. The city had some connection to
Annabeth—the only person he could remember from his past. His memory of her was frustratingly dim. The wolf had promised he would see her
again and regain his memory—if he succeeded in his journey.
Should he try to cross the bay?
It was tempting. He could feel the power of the ocean just over the horizon. Water always revived him. Salt water was the best. He’d discovered
that two days ago when he had strangled a sea monster in the Carquinez Strait. If he could reach the bay, he might be able to make a last stand.
Maybe he could even drown the gorgons. But the shore was at least two miles away. He’d have to cross an entire city.
He hesitated for another reason. The she-wolf Lupa had taught him to sharpen his senses—to trust the instincts that had been guiding him
south. His homing radar was tingling like crazy now. The end of his journey was close—almost right under his feet. But how could that be? There
was nothing on the hilltop.
The wind changed. Percy caught the sour scent of reptile. A hundred yards down the slope, something rustled through the woods—snapping
branches, crunching leaves, hissing.
Gorgons.
For the millionth time, Percy wished their noses weren’t so good. They had always said they could smell him because he was a demigod—the
half-blood son of some old Roman god. Percy had tried rolling in mud, splashing through creeks, even keeping air-freshener sticks in his pockets
so he’d have that new car smell; but apparently demigod stink was hard to mask.
He scrambled to the west side of the summit. It was too steep to descend. The slope plummeted eighty feet, straight to the roof of an apartment
complex built into the hillside. Fifty feet below that, a highway emerged from the hill’s base and wound its way toward Berkeley.
