That is so stupid. Who says that the ending has to change if your writing a fic? The focus of a fic will always be the journey towards that ending.

I never said that the story has to be the same thing. Just that the ending can remain the same if the author wants. For example Harry Potter kills Voldemort in the original books and in a lot of fanfics. It's just the journey towards the end that's has to be different.

but from your comment, I'm guessing the author didn't change anything from the original story and not just the ending, in which case I do agree with you both

Not so sure about that chief, I've read some pretty awesome PoV fanfics, they're good for giving new life to an old story.
