Good Question. Even Ruan Yanjun believes that Luo Fan had proposed to Jinjing because he was afraid of some feelings that he'd rather not entertain. About his feelings for Jinjing, it wasn't explicit but your guess is right. It started out of gratitude and his desire to save her reputation, but it may also be true that there is indeed some amount of love involved. As for him unable to move on, it's more about his guilt that he was unable to protect her. Luo Fan is still naive. There are things that he still does not fully understand, and since this is written in his POV, what he thinks he feels and how he understands/sees things is all that is mentioned. It will take a while before he'll come to a realization. That will be book 3 :)
