Different people react differently. Suppose your loved one was held hostage. You (let's say you know, karate or martial arts) would obviously rush in to save them. Yes, there were better ways to respond to that, but seeing the tears of your loved one as they struggle and seeing the life get taken away from them, you ain't gonna be all smart and calculative, thinking what the best move is as they are taking their last breath.
