You raised a good point. There is not really a way for others to sense the rank of other warriors except when the person in question uses their spirit energy. Most of the time, Aru doesn't, even in combat. He tries to deal with the problem on his own(basically using his muscles). The relationship between aura and spirit energy is like the relationship between electricity and magnetic field. For example when current flows, it generates a magnetic field around it.
