For instance if an eraser was stolen from you and in turn you stole on the back a common description for the event would be "he got payback or revenge" and as the Mc never had anything stolen from him it cannot be considered revenge. Another point of the use of the term is the story or gravity behind it, there's a certain respect and grandeur to revenge depicted in films and literature and as this is a piece of literature, though amateur, should still continue such culture as the all anticipated event rather than the common course of action. In turn the use of “revenge” does not suit the situation as the brother was the one getting revenge, the mc has not lost anything, and he already killed the bear trying to kill him. 2. You just provided the evidence for close minded by citing the author. According to Harvard a proficient reader connects outside knowledge to the current text, aka thinking outside the box”, do you really think listening to the author's current description of the world via current events to conclude a kill or be killed world is really original or free thinking. If you said “ Author words this world to be one leaning towards modesty die to the current danger surrounding immodesty along with the cliche kill or be killed world” but no you had to say “ well the author said this🤓” just reworded.
