he is keeping a promise in good faith. who knows when or how it will be repaid. good karma is always good to accumulate

most martial arts start by teaching defence and only get too offence in later stages. it's much easier to dish it out than to take/ dodge/ block hits. while he is a turtle now, he is also learning how to deal with any sort of attack. which also gives him insight into how to give it out later.
