Coquettish news is fren a specific kind of subdued affectation of shyness or modesty meant to be arousing or teasing (Connotatively). So its use here is mainly to simulate a sort of sarcasm. Like saying ‘A small sum of 1,000,000 dollars’

Amazing paragraph— WebNovels are my guilty pleasure, one I have not indulged in over a year, and just a few hours ago I read ‘The Colour Out of Space’ and ‘Rats in the Walls’ by H.P Lovecraft, and honestly this paragraph is almost comparable in quality. Really shows the potential of this author. While I have definite qualms and grievances with this novel on the whole, such as the poorly developed side characters, the author’s expansive vocabulary and these occasional paragraphs are why I’m still reading.

Egoism is not egotism. The author here is using it correctly, Rational Egoism is a philosophical doctrine popularized by Ayn Rand (read Atlas Shrugged, it’s good), which states that what is ethical is what is in one’s best interest and is a very individualist MORAL philosophy, whereas egotism is what you probably thinking of right now.
Not caring at all about the consequences, he finally began to reason like the rational egoist he had always been. He probably wouldn't see any of these people again, so why bother with the consequences.
