he told them about kaguya and her sons sealing her on the moon. in a nutshell the way he told them specifically left out the fact the moon was the seal that her sons created to imprison her. as such with there being legends about hagoromo and kaguya its possible nagato just didn't make the connection that the moon the sage of six paths created in legends is the moon kaguya is sealed in and that the moon created in the legend was created to seal kaguya. side note: I don't recall anything in the lore saying the planet has 2 moons but the fact they had the concept of what a moon is implies one existed before hagoromo created the one kaguya is sealed in thus logically there must be atleast 2 moons.
