Not really? Being treated like that is seen as normal here to the point we don't even bat an eye at it so I as well got used to it but as I got older I realized that how we were raised would be considered child abuse anywhere else! I remember both of my cousins did something their parents did not approve of and were hit with a wooden stick that was thicker than the used in this novel, it wasn't used to smack a table or anything similar as a warning but both of my cousins themselves were hit multiple times and it was considered "discipline"!
