It might just be referring to the "mainstream" perception, which would be true if you view this as spanning centuries. There was a loooooong period in western cultures where "magic" meant the same thing as "heretic demonic sinner"

Actually, in the 80s there was a ton of anti-Japanese sentiment due to the perception that they were overtaking the US auto/manufacturing industry and stealing people's jobs during their economic boom

Looks like it's just a translation error. My guess is that the original text said "a drinking party" or "party with alcohol" and they just directly translated it as ethanol

Weirdly enough, this is something that actually did happen in the 80s during the Japanese economic boom. Lots of anti-asian racism due to the perception that the Japanese were stealing their jobs

This is an old joke for kids learning Chinese. "Wan" -> "10000", so the joke is that the kid is trying to literally draw 10000 strokes instead of using the character like he should
