So the Rebels, in this case the human supremacist faction, managed to kill most of the royal family and take over the capital city. With the king and most of the family dead, leaving only Crown Princess Gurda alive, and the city in Rebel hands, the loyalists have formed the Resistance to try and get the city and throne back in Gurda's possession. Correction- The angel is Evangeline not Seraphiel. The demon is still Vala though.
Yes that is indeed the case for the original Mord-Sith under the Lord Rahl from the beginning of the series. Richard Cypher or Richard Rahl as you later find out he's the son of that Lord Rahl releases them from service but they choose to keep their agiels, not because they are forced but because they wish to use them to defend Richard as his personal bodyguards. The TV series leaves a lot out and doesn't cover even much of the first book. If the series interested you I would highly suggest reading the books. Speaking of which, I think I'll do that myself as well. The first book in the series is called Wizard's First Rule by the way, which is what most of the TV series is based on, as far as I can remember there's up to 15 books in the series though.
Now, that wolf golem sounds like a real nice puppeh and I want one!
