It’s a bit flipped around - tuition is usually used to refer to teaching a small group or individuals in British English. US English is more widely used globally though so tutoring is probably less jarring!

I believe tuition is synonymous to tutoring/teaching in some other countries, like the UK, so it might be influenced by where the TL learned English?

Realized the last bit is a little misleading! Technically, kanji is does literally mean” Chinese (Han) characters” in Japanese; it just usually refers to the Japanese writing system when used in English.

Hello! I can try to shed some light on what it feels like. An simplified analogy would be to think of the individual characters as words and their components as letters. Just the fact that those pieces come together to form a separate “picture” tells us that this is its own, distinct character. However, in English, we’d have to use spaces to tell us where each word begins and ends; otherwise, they’d end up forming long blobs. (Disclaimer: The explanation isn’t entirely accurate but makes it easier to understand and relate to English.) Also, just thought to briefly mention this, “kanji” typically describes the Japanese writing system that uses Chinese characters, so you were definitely on the right track! Just a little bit off in context.
