Chapter 283: Gunshot

Having run away from the outlaws' den, Helen Blair and Reuben Carter, although completely drained, dared not slacken for fear of being caught by the gangsters. They continued to rush down the road non-stop.

It was already winter. Though there hadn't been much snow, the weather was exceptionally cold, especially the wind. It was chilling to the bone and sharp, stinging the face like a knife's cut. The wind rushed through the trees, wailing like ghostly howls and wolf cries, especially creepy in the silent night.

The sky was devoid of stars or moon, so it was pitch black. They couldn't make out the path nor the direction to take. Helen pulled Reuben along, just walking wherever there appeared to be a trail, wandering aimlessly through the forest. It wasn't until dawn that they made it out of the woods.
