Two Captured

Chapter 1

Laws.

That's all our lives depended on; What we did, what we say and everything that makes us well...us. There were several laws but the Seven were repeated daily. Only one more reminder that we are never free, at least those who were not me.

I sighed gently overlooking District Minerals, A warm hand landed on my shoulder. I turned to meet his chocolate brown eyes a small smile curling up from my lips. His caramel skin reminded me of the beautiful Tiger Eye gems found in the Gemcaverns, his hair like Black Obsidian hidden under his dark hood.

His eyes shimmered with a type of sadness, the tightness in his jaw only proving more his struggle to keep a grip. I whispered to him,

"Bear I know it's hard but we HAVE to keep moving, come on."

He shook out of his memories and looked on determined, moving ahead with me following shortly behind him. We ran through the alleys and as we came towards the walls we could hear the Order behind us, Their lights soon to shine on us.

"Bear, go!"

He jumped over if i hadn't of done it literally seconds after he did I would've been one of the Captured. We ran as if the wind carried us, jumping over our obstacles and eventually going into the Desolate.

The Desolate was a hub for all Phoenix Born, all attention was easily pointed towards us; the final arrivals. I stood over at the pedestal and silence persuaded the crowd, My eyes followed to the blonde boy standing in the corner beside the wall of photos and candles.

With a deep sigh, dark eyes and the faint movement, he burned two pictures over a pink and white candle before blowing them out. Two more Captured and two less Phoenix borns, I tried not to let my body heat up.

After addressing the group of normal things I mentioned the Captured, "Sadly we have two more Captured may we share a few moments of silence for them." After minutes of silence for the Captured everyone resumed normal duties.

I walked to the boy, the cut on his cheek less harsh now after a week of healing. I bowed my head slightly at him, "

"Hi, Wick."

"Evening Beauty, Bear."

My eyes glazed over the wall of photos and table of multicoloured burning candles, I smiled a little as I looked at the many faces feeling a sense of peace and clarity.

The sirens rang from the closest District a faint robotic woman talking in the distance making me clear my throat, "Lights out Phoenix born!"

I turned heading to the archives of the Desolate, Bear like usual followed my pace finding his normal seat beside me as I wrote into another document. Within the time of me writing Bear fell asleep beside me, I smiled gently at his relaxed features pulling a blanket around him then continued writing until Wick came over sitting on the other side of me. His eyes glanced at the sleeping Bear and whispered gently, "It's getting worse Beauty, the Order has never been this relentless before. What's changed?"

I could barely answer since even I couldn't wrack my head to find out why he sighed gently. "He's gotten closer to you."

"I know.."

"What happens Beauty? What happens when its the next little kid? A mother? Bear-"

I slammed my fist on the table and narrowed my eyes at him, "I'm doing everything I can, what more do you want me to do?" He got up slowly and started to leave then turned back to me and muttered, "You need to not just recruit to hide in the dark, fight back Beauty. Fight."

As soon as he walked out I reconsidered his words, was it worth fighting? To lose so many of our own? The thoughts in my mind went soundless as I drifted to sleep.

I stir to the Night Alert seeing a cup of hot chocolate in an intricate floral design before my eyes, I smile and take the cup from Bear muttering a thank you, I stood up to the pedestal as everyone gathered. Glancing over at Wick and thinking of his words then took a gentle sigh, announcing clear as day. "The assignments for today have been...Altered; Shade, Cookie and Shimmer you will do our normal supply run. Daisy, Bubbles and Taster I am sending you to the Armory in District Cyclone-"

I felt the eyes on me widen and whispers among the crowd, the worst was Bear's. I continued with an approved look from Wick. "From today no courier will leave without a weapon. Encounter any member of the Order you are instructed to wound or kill on sight." I heard the shouts of protest but could only turn away, I was barely able to look at Bear as he grabbed my shoulder.

"Beauty, kill? We can't-" I looked up and glared at him, replying barely above a whisper. "We have no choice now. I'm doing what's best..."

With that I stormed away, going to the bell tower. The bell tower was a tall white brick building resembling a lighthouse; it was so tall it was almost reaching the heavens, it overlooked all the Districts in Nirvana and was completely abandoned. It was...home, I sat by the dark gold bell my map beside me and sighed gently. The Six Districts; Minerals, Cyclone, Tide, Inferno, Discharge and Voltage. All of them laid before my eyes when a hand landed on my shoulder, I looked up at him.

"Beauty...?"

"Bear I...."

His arms were around me faster than a tiger pouncing on prey, he whispered into my hair.

"I know it's the best Beauty...just...be safe okay?"

I felt my lips curl up into a smile, I ruffled his hair and curled up in his arms. I interlaced our fingers and whispered softly as the moon rose high into the sky.

"I know Bear, I will be."
