“Away! Away!” Xander more or less hoisted the both of us to our feet by the scruff of our necks as the Zombies closed in. Once up, the three of us ran away as fast as our living feet could carry us. But then, of course, I had to stop.
“Zoe!”
I turned and ran back to where I’d dropped her, oblivious to anything else. I’d gotten her this far, I wasn’t about to leave her behind. Unfortunately, this led me directly into the path of the March of Zombies. The lead Zombie and I reached Zoe’s corpse at the same time. I grabbed one leg, the Zombie grabbed the other, and we were milliseconds away from snapping her in half like a wishbone before I managed to put on the brakes.
“Uuuunnnnghhhhhh!” said the Zombie.
“Leave her alone!” I answered, planting a solid kick into the Zombie’s face, crushing the cartilage into the thing’s brain and destroying it instantly. Face now completely concave, it let go of Zoe's leg and flopped to the ground.
