You want to know something crazy? My first thought when that wall slammed down wasn’t that I was going to die, but that I wasn’t going to die the right way. With everything I’d been through in the past week or so, I guess I’d come to view death as simply the official beginning of middle age. Not that I wanted to die, or needed to be put on any suicide watches or anything, but I was in possession of the true answer to mankind’s eternal question ‘Is there life after death?’ Turns out, yes there is, it’s just not that exciting.
Plus, maybe if I died, I could hook up with Zoe.
But now I was going to be denied my second life. The chamber was about to get pumped full of toxic gas and Gus and poor Sally were going to witness my head exploding—something I was not looking forward to at all.
The temple, however, had other plans, and all my moping was for naught. As soon as the chamber was sealed, all the bricks that I hadn’t pushed into the wall were sucked in randomly one by one.
