In reality, each being had a field around them, that would give them the support of the material plane's space according to their existing power, according to their overall stats in every single area. Why? Because their existence put weight into the material plane, and formed that field. The strength of this field was affected by magic, physical, and all other aspects that earned their foundational powers.
The rods felt resistance from that field, but their fields were not strong enough and these Rods were way more powerful as they held held power of one of the most offensive elements in general--Nihilir, in their structure and Nihilir's enchants, that they could not do anything to prevent these rods from puncturing them in that second.
