Before dinner, Gabriel was called into the study room upstairs by Keith Jones. The men from the collateral branch were playing chess in the room while the women chatted in the living room.
Today's main character was Serenity, so the topic of conversation always revolved around her. No matter what others asked, she would answer them readily in a dignified manner.
Without Gabriel around, Madam Eaton regained the courage to provoke Serenity but the latter always managed to either change or avoid the topic.
