INVINCIBLE ME?

It wasn't a room. Rooms had boundaries; this place was a boundless bone white expanse. The being—as much as I could define it— was a ghostlike resplendent mass of finger thick tendrils. Its length extended all the way up past the limitless room, in fact the very floor seemed to be made of little bits of it.

It felt unreal, too soft to be hard and yet hard enough to support my weight.

"What are you?" I asked

THAT IS NOT IMPORTANT

"It is to me." What else could you be scared of when you were already dead? Heaven, hell, come what may, I'll accept.

THERE IS A GREAT TASK AT HAND. WE SACRIFICED MUCH TO ENTRUST TO ONE WE THOUGHT WOULD RISE UP TO IT. BUT HE IS A DISGRACE.

So you're dodging my questions. "What does that have to do with me?" I knew exactly what it had to do with me—it was the basic quest type scenario.

YOU WERE CHOSEN DUE TO PROXIMITY AND THE CONDITIONS YOU MET. THIS SINGLE MOMENT HAS CONSUMED ALL WE HAVE.

"…"

ALTHOUGH YOU WERE CHOSEN. THIS TASK CANNOT BE FORCED UPON YOU, YOU MUST DECIDE TO ACCEPT IT OR DECLINE.

"What is the task?"

SAVE THE WORLD. SAVE IT FROM DESTRUCTION AND DESOLATION.

"Does that include everyone on it? I can't do that without omnipotence."

THE WORLD ITSELF. HUMANITY WILL ALWAYS THRIVE AS LONG AS THE EARTH EXISTS.

"To be honest I actually like the challenge, but you knew that already. I accept." It was obvious they knew certain things about me and for me to have met whatever criteria it was to have been chosen despite that, well they must be desperate. It wasn't like I was going to toss away the chance to live again, now was I?

YOU ARE OUR LAST HOPE. THERE MUST BE ASSURANCES. IF THE WORLD DIES, SO WILL YOU.

A weight settled on me, an almost imperceptible one but I knew it was there, so a contract clause. Well, there goes my dine and dash plan. Looks like I'll have to actually see this through.

"And when is the world deemed saved exactly?" I asked, I couldn't keep working without considering my retirement options.

WHEN THE BINDING NO LONGER RESTS ON YOUR SOUL.

That sounded succinct yet vague, did they mean that after I saved the world I'd be done? Is this a Thanos stopping type deal, did I have to fight a massive big bad and all would be done with or did I have to stop environmental destruction? I would have asked, but I felt a sense of urgency as tendrils extended out of the glowing mass and reached towards my soul.

"What if I die?"

DON'T.

Was the last thing I heard.

There are many ways to act in many situations. Some ways are sensible and some aren't, I don't claim to be a robot, but I'll more often than not, think before I act.

I could be screaming, I could be hyperventilating and panicking so badly my heart erupts out of my chest. But then again, that wouldn't really help me.

So, I shut up, sat at the dinner table and shoveled food into my mouth, watching an Asian woman and a Caucasian man who called themselves my parents go about talking.

I had no idea what they were even talking about, it seemed to be some outlandish sci-fi show where the guy—let's call him moustache man, is the main protagonist and he just happens to be called Omni-man.

If you've seen or read Invincible then you'll know that name and if you haven't—it's the cape-name of a Viltrumite, think of a 50/50 mix between Kryptonians and Saiyans. Sent to evaluate and conquer the Earth for the holy Viltrum empire, but who spends so much time here he gets sidetracked, a crusader who falls to temptation, a Primarch who falls to chaos—why Horus, why? Such haram.

I know, I know brain, my analogies are a thing of beauty, but back to arranging my thoughts. Omni-man is your basic hero turned bad guy, turned hero with a cyclic redemption arc. He essentially slaughters the bootleg Justice League of his planet to pave the way for the Holy Viltrum Empire's assumption of Earth.

It's not really called the Holy empire but c'mon, the Space marine in me must give glory to WH40k…forgive my playfulness, it's my most effective coping mechanism.

That being, whatever it was couldn't have possibly dropped me into a world of superheroes could it?

It couldn't have possibly dropped me in one that had more failed alternate realities than successful ones could it? One with multiple futures where Earth was destroyed, dead and desolate in more times than not.

When it said 'save the world', I was thinking of a magical medieval land where I had to slay the lord of the rings or a mighty dragon, or even a future war-torn world where I had to end the war to save earth. Not this.

The odds were stacked against me from the get go, I was surrounded by adversity and pitfalls on all sides and angles. I had them right where I wanted them. I have to applaud that being, it really got a bargain choosing me.

"Mark has something interesting to tell us."

"Does he now?"

Which reality was I in? For all I know I was in one of those failed alternate realities and since I had no way of differentiating them, that it could very well be true.

Sigh.

Looks like I'd have to become an Emperor.

"Go on, Mark."

The weight on my soul was still there. If I was going to be saving the earth, I was going to do it my way. It was a challenge of course but I'd be damned to not try and overcome it.

"Look at that grin, what do you think he's daydreaming about?"

"Mark!"

"Urhk! Cough cough" I choked on a chunk of fried chicken as a male voice ripped through my fantasies. "Cough erhm yeah." I swallowed a glass of water and regained my bearings.

"Who's the girl, Mark?" The lady said, what was her name again?

"What? No, there's no girl" I smiled, utilizing what memories I could access to fluidly behave like their son.

"You're fooling no one." Said moustache man with a smirk. Did he have his powers in this reality, did powers even exist in this reality? Did I spend that entire time gassing myself up by over thinking nothing?

Let's see. "My powers kicked in." If this was a world without superpowers they'd stare at me and laugh at such a ridiculous statement.

No one's laughing.

The lady was smiling from ear to ear and the man gave me a thousand yard stare.

Well then, looks like we're a go.

Here it is. An invincible fic. This one has a chapter cache, enough to bring the story to a soft close and to gauge the general reception towards it.
