That was the year the bombs dropped.
That was the year everything changed for the worse.
Everything hurt. My head, my arms, my legs. I pushed the rubble and debris from my body and tried to sit up to no avail. I was going to die here.
That's when I saw it, a figure standing in the corner of the destroyed room. "Ah, you're finally awake," it said. I could not see its mouth move as a black hat covered its face in shadows; it didn't even seem to be actually talking—the voice was speaking to me directly in my head.
"Let me help you," it said. "Let me help you help me. You have two choices. I can give you power, or I can let you die. I can give you the power to build an army, to rebuild the world you lost."
"Or you can take the second option. You can take the easy way out. You can take the well-trodden path.
"Just know this: if you choose the first option and dare to betray me, I will personally drag you to the deepest pits of hell. There, you will suffer unimaginable torment, your screams lost in the eternal darkness. You will wish for death, but it will never come. Your agony will be my satisfaction, and your despair will echo through the void for all eternity."
