So painful were those moments When the earth shook and the seas rose How cheerful life could stand still As though everything was killed All the happiness gone once for all That seemed to me a painful fall Everything I knew wiped away All I could hear was the deafening silence All I could feel was emptiness As if everything was shrouded in darkness All I could hear was my sister crying in madness Adapted from Farah Sherazi's Destruction, Death and Decay.

Chapter 32: Chief of Police

The sound of an alert from Raziel's phone sent him jumping up from his bed. It was already six in the morning.

He picked up to check it and saw that he had received a deposit of one thousand dollars from Vice-Admiral Rowland. He put the phone back on the bed.

He got off the bed and went into the bathroom to clean up himself. After spending about ten minutes in the bathroom, he came out and started to dress up.

He wore a black jeans and put on a leather jacket. He tied his durag and put on a shoe.

I guess I should start going to work now after all, I'm not familiar with the capital. He took his ID card and left his house locking the door behind him.

He took out his phone and opened an app called earth map to try and locate central Tenebren police department. He found the easiest way for him to get there was by taking the subway.

He hitched a ride to West Glawski subway and purchased a ticket in the subway station.

He got into the train but he could find no place to sit. He had to stand while enduring the odour wafting from the smelly armpit of the woman in front of him.

I definitely should include getting a car in my to do list. It took the train thirty minutes to get to Central Tenebren. He got off the train joyfully and started to look for the police department.

It took him about twenty minutes to find even with the help of earth map. Central Tenebren was very large.

He walked in the front door and asked to see the Chief of Police after identifying himself.

He was taken up to meet the Chief of Police in his office by an albino man on the highest floor of the building. He wondered how he got employed in the biggest police department. The albino pointed towards his office and turned back.

Okay, at least you should have taken me inside. He walked up to the door and knocked.

"Come in." A sinister voice said.

The voice gave Raziel chills and he contemplated running away. He summoned his courage and opened the door to see a very fat man who seemed to have filled out the whole chair he was sitting on. He appeared to be in his early twenties.

"Good morning sir, my name is Raziel Yael. I was sent here by Vice-Admiral Rowland." Raziel said while trying to keep a straight face. He certainly wasn't expecting the chief of police to be fat and very young at that.

The fat man pointed at the chair in front of Raziel, "Sit down!"

The high pitched tone made Raziel jumpy and he quickly obeyed the command.

The chief of police tried to lean forward in his chair but it seemed impossible. His buttocks seemed to have sank too deep in the chair. Everytime he tried to lean forward, it looked like the chair kept pulling him back. The sight was quite comical.

At last he seemed to have given up and relaxed back into his chair.

"I know who you are! You used your connections to become a detective in this department.

"Guess what? I will send you back to your master in two weeks if you're not yet at level 2." The Chief of Police laughed sinisterly.

Raziel was shocked, "But I was given a month's time to advance by Vice-Admiral Rowland."

The Chief of Police waved his fat fingers in his face, "I don't care about your master. I am the god in this place. I make the rules. If you don't like it, run back to your master."

The repeated use of the word master was starting to grate on Raziel's nerves. This COP seemed hell bent on making him angry.

He closed his eyes and controlled his emotions. He then said in a cool voice, "Yes sir. I'll strive to be a level 2 in two weeks."

The COP bobbed his head, "That's good. Give me your ID card."

Raziel handed his ID card over to him. The COP swiped the ID card on a device and printed a new one out. He threw the old one into a shredder and handed the new one to Raziel.

"That new ID card contains your police badge. You're now an officer of my department. Go to the third floor and look for Maya. She's going to be your partner." The COP said while biting his nails.

Raziel stood up to leave the COP office. He glanced at the wall and a frame of the COP with his name underneath it.

The name was Jamal Zahir.
