Freedom In Fetters

Ogbaturugo, Onyima's father was a notable warrior from Umuarokoro hamlet in Okwu village, and he had been in rivalry with Ezeukwu, a kinsman over a piece of inherited land. One day, while Ogbaturugo was on his way to Iyioru swamp to gather raffia branches, which he will use in making weaved raffia sheets to repair his leaking roof, he was attacked by a fiery leopard. It was a fierce fight that he was carried home half dead after being rescued by Ojishi the palm wine tapper. Later in the night of the same day that Ogbaturugo was attacked, the fiery leopard visited his house and killed a goat in the pen behind Ogbaturugo's window without devouring it. Eventually, Ogbaturugo died few days after the fight and was buried. Seven years later, during the feast of the performance of Ogbaturugo's traditional burial rite, and Onyima his son, in a quest to unravel the cause of his father's death, poisoned the palm wine which he served his kinsmen with the rotted bone of the dead goat. Few days after the feast at Onyima's house, Ezeukwu died. As a result of the calamitous signs that followed Ezeukwu's death, a selected group of young men were sent on a journey to Ibibi to find out what was amiss. On their return, it was revealed that Onyima was responsible for Ezeukwu's death. According to the custom of Okwu people, Onyima will have to prove his innocence by swearing to an oath, instead, he ran away and took refuge at Mgbokoro shrine. While Onyima was at Mgbokoro shrine, there was killing of one government messenger sent to Olokoro community by the White man, and another attack on a doctor who came to another part of the community. Prior to these atrocities by Olokoro people against the white man, there had been incessant rapes and harassments of Olokoro girls and women around Lodu military transient camp by soldiers. Upon these happenings, the enraged soldiers gathered all the available forces and headed to Olokoro community through Mgbokoro Okwu route to retaliate the deaths and it plunged the both parties into an unrehearsed war.

IS A MAD MAN

IS A MAD MAN The Pharmacy Council of Nigeria, Lagos Chapter showed up one terrible afternoon and packed all the medications worth millions of naira from my ex pharmacy store and locked up the shop...all because the store was opened closed to another wholesalers pharmacy store owned by a non-pharmacy person. We opened the pharmacy store two years after we got married simply because three days after the wedding I lost my job with the foremost business university in Africa as a consultant and lecturer and three months after the wedding she lost her job too. So we pulled our savings together to start the store and just like that it was gone. She was taken to Ikeja old secretariat and I followed them, then to Alausa where she was charged to the court; I was there too...but luckily for us, the judge looked at me and said, what is your offense...? And I said not me sir, but us. Who are the us he said, and I said myself and my wife. Are you a pharmacist? No sir, my wife is. Where is your wife? I pointed at her. Then he looked at her and said...is this your husband? She smiled and said yes he is sir. Then, I am going to let you go free of charge because of this man. I heard people saying that he had been with you since yesterday that they lock up the shop...not so many men can stand by their wife in such a moment like this. He is a good man. He loves you. Whatever case that was filed against her was null but there was a document she was to submit at the Lagos State Pharmacy Council office at Old Secretariat Ikeja, but she was too emotionally down to do that so I volunteered to do that for her. The following morning, I set out to go, took a bus to Ikeja, the bus dropped me off at Under the Bridge closed to the General Hospital and I took a Bike to the Old Secretariat Ikeja. On getting there, I gave the Bike man N200 and he said that he doesn't have N100 change. I wanted to leave the money for me but I refused. Then a mad man came, gave the Bike man N100 and told me to go to where I am going. How about your money I asked and he said when you come back. I immediately left to the office, dropped the documents and dashed out because I have a 10:00am business appointment on the Island. I walked straight to the mad man, gave him N200 and he said I should not worry I should go...the N100 he gave the Bike man was a dash. Gbam, I refused. I should be giving you money I said not you giving me. After talking back and forth he collected the money from me and immediately he started praying for me right on the road...I went on my knees and this man kept praying powerful prayers for almost 45 minutes. After the prayers, he said to me, young man, leave your wife...I love you love her and you will not leave her...death is hanging over your head and it is coming from her. Fast for 21 days and break the fast by 9:00pm at night. Cook the food yourself. Before I could say a word, he walked away. This was 2013; I did the fasting as instructed and nothing happened until November 4, 2016 when the trailer climbed up my car in Ikorodu on my way to buy a plot of land for her for the wedding anniversary and when the accident will not kill me, on December 16, 2016 she poisoned my food, I ate the food and passed out...died...how I came back to life I still cannot explain but I thank God I am alive. My grandmother used to say that little prayers are much more effective than long prayers...a simple act of foolishness to obey a simple instruction that looks stupid and unrealistic can save you from a lasting awaiting disaster. God can use anyone to save you...the question is, how simple and humble are you to be saved...? ©®™ Sam Adeoye

1986

The most damning evidence against the film was promotional materials and even the opening credits of certain copies of Nosferatu that clearly stated that the film was an adaptation of Stoker’s novel. Unable to ignore such evidence, a German court found Nosferatu to be an unlicensed derivative work of Dracula and ordered that every copy of the film be destroyed. While this should have marked the end of the film’s legacy, one copy avoided destruction and resurfaced in the United States, where it was released in 1929. Under the U.S. copyright law of the time, in order for works by a foreign author to enjoy copyright protection in the United States, the author’s country of citizenship must have had a copyright proclamation or agreement with the United States. Stoker was a British citizen, and under the Chace Act, President Harrison had extended copyright to works by British citizens in 1891, thus making Stoker’s work eligible for United States copyright protection. However, United States copyright law also required two copies of the work be deposited with the U.S. Copyright Office. Stoker had never satisfied this deposit requirement, and therefore Dracula was part of the public domain in the United States. Stoker’s estate was thus unable to take any legal action against Nosferatu in the United States, and the film gained a second lease on life, developing into a definitive piece of vampire pop culture. These three tales highlight just a few of the interactions between copyright law and the horror genre. Such tales should serve as reminder to always double check copyright laws to avoid the scare of an unexpected law lurking in the shadows.
