While on the phone with the cake shop, Basil Jaak drove to the flower shop.
The owner was about to close for the day. Seeing Basil, she reopened the door and asked, "What kind of flowers are you after, young man?"
Though Basil was skilled in many things, he was illiterate when it came to understanding flowers and their meanings.
The shop owner, a woman in her forties, seemed to see his dilemma and asked, "Are these flowers for your girlfriend?"
"No!" Basil shook his head. Xenia Wendleton wasn't technically his girlfriend yet.
"Then you are ... Look, I'm not trying to gossip! If it's inconvenient, don't answer. But if you feel like you can, tell me and I'll help you pick something out," the owner said cheerfully, very politely indeed.
Basil replied, "There's nothing to hide. I'm just buying a bouquet for a friend. Today is her birthday."
"A female friend?"
"That's right!" Basil nodded, then asked the owner, "Do different flowers have different meanings for men and women?"
