As Makoto approached the vicinity of Marenoshin's tent, he caught a distinct scent even before stepping inside—a pungent, unmistakable aroma of wealth.
It was the smell of money.
The next moment, the tent's flap was pulled open, and a figure adorned in dazzling gold emerged: Omaeda Marenoshin himself.
Previously, within the confines of the Shihoin family courtyard, Marenoshin had shown some restraint in his attire, likely due to the presence of Shihoin Yoruichi and Shihoin Yushiro. However, the Marenoshin standing before Makoto now seemed to have abandoned all pretense of modesty.
A thick gold chain hung from his neck, each finger was adorned with rings embedded with various gemstones, and even the frames of his sunglasses sparkled, clearly crafted from solid gold.
It was as if every inch of Marenoshin's body that could be embellished had been extravagantly adorned with gold and jade, leaving nothing to waste.
While ostentatious to the point of vulgarity, Makoto couldn't deny that this garish display perfectly suited Marenoshin's "radiance," especially considering the man had promised to handle the restoration of the Fourth Division barracks.
With a broad smile plastered across his face, Marenoshin greeted Makoto warmly.
"Well, Vice-Captain Senju, what brings you here personally?"
"Marenoshin, Vice-Captain of the Second Division! I should be the one asking why you arrived at the Fourth Division without notice. Had I known, I would've prepared a proper reception," Makoto replied, matching his enthusiasm.
"Ah, no need to trouble you, Vice-Captain Senju. I'm simply here to check on that fool Omaeda Marechiyo."
"You're too modest, Vice-Captain Marenoshin. Young Master Marechiyo is clearly a dragon among men, destined for great things. The future of the Omaeda family is bright, and perhaps even greater heights await."
"Ha! Vice-Captain Senju, you flatter me! The Omaeda family will need your support and guidance in the years to come."
The conversation flowed smoothly, filled with endless compliments. The rapport between the two was so harmonious that it felt as if they had been lifelong friends who had only just reunited.
Eventually, just as Makoto felt he might be praised to the point of ascending into nobility and securing eternal fame within the Seireitei, Marenoshin shifted the topic back to business.
"Makoto, the restoration work is set to begin tomorrow. The project is expected to be completed within half a month," Marenoshin informed him.
Makoto was pleasantly surprised by the efficiency. In just a single day, Marenoshin had coordinated such extensive resources, underscoring his vast influence.
"That's excellent news! Most of the barracks can be restored to their original state, but I'll prepare a design concept for areas that need modification and deliver it to you tonight," Makoto said earnestly.
"Consider it done. Even if significant adjustments are required mid-project, feel free to bring them up. I'll ensure both you and Captain Unohana are fully satisfied," Marenoshin assured, his tone particularly emphasizing Makoto's name before Unohana's, subtly implying that Makoto's preferences would take precedence.
"Thank you, Vice-Captain Marenoshin," Makoto replied sincerely.
Marenoshin's attitude, however, stemmed from more than mere gratitude for past favors. While Makoto's relationship with Shihoin Yushiro was significant, what truly influenced Marenoshin's deference was a directive from Shihoin Yoruichi herself:
"Treat Senju Makoto with utmost respect. Assist him wherever possible."
The message was simple, but its implications were profound.
Though the Omaeda family was one of the wealthiest noble houses in the Soul Society, their status was inextricably tied to their allegiance to the Shihoin family. Yoruichi's instructions left Marenoshin no choice but to prioritize building rapport with Makoto.
After all, if Makoto were to one day become a part of the Shihoin family, the dividends on today's investment would be astronomical.

In the days that followed, Makoto was overwhelmed with work despite Isane's assistance. He busied himself not only with assuming control of the Fourth Division's operations but also with overseeing the barracks' restoration.
In particular, Makoto paid close attention to every detail of Captain Unohana's courtyard. Additionally, he made regular visits to check on Unohana, who was temporarily housed within the Central 46 Chambers.
The Central 46's attitude towards Unohana was a paradoxical mix of fear and reverence, stemming from her infamous past as the most feared "villain" of the Soul Society a millennium ago. They imposed strict limitations on her movements while simultaneously treating her with the utmost care, lest her mood destabilize.
Ironically, the situation that weighed most heavily on Makoto's mind was that of Soi Fon.
That night, Makoto had failed to attend what was likely the most pivotal moment in Soi Fon's life. Both he and Yoruichi had been absent, a fact that must have been a devastating blow to her.
Following this, Yoruichi had silently left the Seireitei, further compounding Soi Fon's sense of abandonment. Makoto, through Urozakuro's network, had been monitoring her condition. Yet, Soi Fon seemed determined to avoid him, throwing herself into mission after mission under the alias "Sui Feng" to distract herself from her pain.
Despite his rapport with Marenoshin, Makoto knew it would be improper to interfere in the Second Division's internal affairs, especially given their unique role within the Gotei 13. However, Marenoshin, overhearing Makoto's concerns one day, offered a rather… unconventional solution.
"Ah, I see. Makoto, give me a moment. I'll adjust Soi Fon's assignments and have her stationed at your tent tonight…"
Makoto froze.
Marenoshin paused dramatically before clarifying, "…as your bodyguard. This way, it'll be more convenient for you to speak with her."
Makoto sighed internally. At least Marenoshin's intentions were in the right place.
