Chapter 30: Meeting with the Armed Forces

Also in February, Gustavo Andrade called an important meeting with the commanders of the Brazilian Armed Forces. The main objective was to discuss the current state of the Brazilian Armed Forces, analyze their needs and prepare the country to face global challenges. In addition, Gustavo also wanted information about Brazilians who were possibly still in Ukraine, given the ongoing conflict in the region.

The meeting would be held at the Planalto Palace, and the atmosphere was one of anticipation. Gustavo knew that this meeting would not only be technical, but also a demonstration of his commitment to Brazil's national security and sovereignty.

On the morning scheduled for the meeting, the main commanders of the Armed Forces arrived at the Planalto Palace. General Tomás Paiva, commander of the Army, Admiral Marcos Olsen, of the Navy, and Lieutenant-Brigadier Marcelo Damasceno, of the Air Force, were received by presidential advisors before being led to the meeting room.

The first point discussed was the state of the Brazilian Armed Forces. General Paiva took the floor to provide an overview of the Army.

— Mr. President, the Brazilian Army is in good shape, but it is undeniable that we face some challenges. The modernization of our equipment is urgent, especially with the technological advances we see around the world. In addition, we need more investment in training to keep our troops ready for any eventuality.

Admiral Olsen, Commander of the Navy, added:

— The Navy also faces similar challenges, especially with regard to the protection of our territorial waters and the maintenance of our submarines and frigates. Brazil's maritime defense is crucial, especially with the importance of the Blue Amazon, and we need to strengthen our fleet.

Gustavo listened attentively. He knew that Brazil, with its vast territory and natural wealth, needed modern and well-equipped Armed Forces to guarantee its sovereignty.

— We are aware of these needs, Admiral, General. I believe that the security of our territory must be a top priority. We will initiate a plan to modernize our Armed Forces. It will be gradual, but you will have the necessary resources to ensure that Brazil is prepared to face any challenge, said Gustavo with conviction.

Brigadier Damasceno, commander of the Air Force, added:

— Brazilian airspace also needs more attention. We have made progress, but our fighter jets and air defense systems need to be updated to keep up with the advances of global powers. Our ability to monitor and defend our airspace is crucial.

Gustavo nodded in agreement.

— Minister, we will prepare a plan to direct more resources to the Armed Forces, ensuring that the Army, Navy and Air Force can operate with cutting-edge technology. We cannot neglect our sovereignty, especially in a world where conflicts are constantly evolving.

After discussing the modernization of the Armed Forces, Gustavo changed the focus of the meeting to a more immediate and sensitive topic: the situation of Brazilians in Ukraine, a country that was still facing a violent conflict due to the Russian invasion. He wanted to know if there were any Brazilian citizens still in the territory and what measures were being taken to ensure their safety.

— Gentlemen, I need an update on the Brazilians who are possibly still in Ukraine. We know that, during the beginning of the conflict, many left the country, but there are still reports that some may be there. What is the current situation?, asked Gustavo.

The General, who was in contact with military intelligence, responded:

— President, since the beginning of the conflict, we have made considerable efforts to locate and remove Brazilians from the combat region. Most have already been evacuated, with the help of embassies and rescue teams, but it is possible that a few are still in Ukraine, either by their own will or due to logistical difficulties.

The Brigadier intervened:

— Our monitoring and communication systems are on alert. Any Brazilian who requests assistance will be rescued as quickly as possible, but the situation in Ukraine is complicated, with closed borders and fighting in several regions. We are ready to act if necessary.

Gustavo was silent for a moment, processing the information. He knew that the safety of Brazilian citizens abroad was a priority for his government.

"We need to intensify our diplomatic efforts to ensure that all Brazilians are evacuated safely. In addition, it is important that our consulates in the region maintain constant contact with those who are still there, ensuring that they know that Brazil is doing everything it can to help them."

The Minister of Defense added:

"We are working together with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to ensure the safety of all Brazilians in Ukraine. Cooperation between the Armed Forces and diplomacy has been essential in this process.

At the end of the meeting, Gustavo thanked all the commanders for the information and their dedication to Brazil. He knew that the challenges ahead were great, both in terms of modernizing the Armed Forces and protecting Brazilians in conflict zones.

— Gentlemen, I thank you for your commitment and transparency. Let us begin working on these points immediately. Brazil can no longer be seen as a nation without a voice or without the power to defend itself. We will modernize our forces, ensure that our citizens are protected, and show the world that Brazil is prepared for any eventuality.

The commanders agreed, and the meeting ended with the feeling that a new chapter was beginning for the Brazilian Armed Forces.

As the commanders left, Gustavo remained in his office, reflecting on the weight of the responsibility he now carried. He knew that modernizing the Armed Forces was only one part of the grand plan he had to transform Brazil into a global power.

— We are on the right path, he muttered to himself, as he looked out the window of the Planalto Palace, with the vision of a stronger and more sovereign Brazil on the horizon.
