Chapter 49 : Karin 2

Life works in mysterious ways. I wasn't planning on revealing myself in front of Karin, but ultimately had to because, just like in the anime, her life was in danger here too.

I saw Karin and her team were complete idiots and decided to attack the Sand team of all people.

Gaara of all people. What were they thinking?

Not everything can go like it did in the anime. Team Grass (Karin's team) unfortunately ran into Gaara's team.

The two boys in her team ended up attacking Gaara with kunai.

A freaking kunai.

Needless to say, they were dead. But Karin—I didn't want her to die.

Sigh...

Karin knew something was wrong when she saw Gaara. Her mind's eye, the Kaguya bloodline ability, was screaming at her not to get close. She tried to persuade her teammates, but those idiots didn't listen.

Both of them were dead now, and soon she would be too...

She saw the red-haired sand user, who could manipulate sand, set his eyes on her. A shiver ran through her. She could sense something much more dangerous inside him, something wild and primal.

That chakra was not human, it was...

Before she could even react and make a run for it, her plans of escaping or giving up were destroyed. Something in her mind told her that this boy wasn't the type to just let her go if she asked nicely.

"Sand Coffin." Gaara directed his attack toward her, almost grabbing her.

"Water Style, Water Bullet." The sound came just then, and in the next second, a boy of the same age as Gaara's team and Karin appeared, blowing away the sand Gaara sent toward her.

Of course, this was my doing. It was fortunate that my water attack restrained the sand. I lucked out. The consumption for water jutsu isn't much either, especially since I used Max Elephant's water.

"You're lucky. If I had been even one second later, you'd have been toast." I looked down at the red-haired girl, who still had her eyes closed behind those glasses, probably waiting to die.

Hearing this, Karin jolted awake. Opening her eyes, she found she was still alive and being held by a boy.

Her mind was slow to comprehend what was happening. But we didn't have time for her to catch up.

"Listen, get out of here. That guy is not something you can handle. Just go, alright?" I saw Gaara still standing there. I made her stand up, her face still showing confusion.

"What are you waiting for? Keep going already," I shouted as I manually turned and pushed her, only for her to fall down.

"Huh?" I frowned. My eyes went to her legs and saw that I wasn't fast enough after all. Gaara's attack had caught up to her by the time my water bullet blocked the initial assault.

Her legs were mangled. She might not feel the pain right now due to the lingering adrenaline from the situation.

"Hmm, sorry, sorry." I quickly picked her up, finally seeing her receptors catching up. But the strange thing was, she wasn't showing any hint of pain. Maybe her life had taught her how to hide it.

Sigh... this world.

Before I could do anything more, my attention shifted to Gaara, who was preparing to attack again.

"Gaara, there's no point in killing them. We already have both the scrolls," Kankuro said, but Gaara didn't care at all. He just wanted to kill me and Karin, and Temari was behaving as if she had nothing to do with it.

I saw the hand moving toward us, making both me and Karin alert. Now I knew I had to reveal my Ten Shadows in front of others, but there are times when I have to break that rule.

This was one of those times. So I quickly wrapped my hand around Karin's waist, not even trying to fight Gaara. My only objective was to run away.

Karin saw this but didn't object. She was more worried about her life than seeing a boy manhandling her like a doll.

"Hold on tight," I shouted, and while my hand was still around Karin's waist, I made the hand sign.

'Rabbit Escape.'

The next second, before the sea of sand rushed at us, my shadow extended, and a torrent of white rabbits appeared.

The sheer quantity of rabbits overwhelmed the sand, even casting a shadow that blocked the sun. The rabbits formed a pillar high enough to cover three sides of the forest visible to Team Sand.

"What the hell?" Kankuro and Temari were taken aback.

They knew about ninja summons but usually only saw one or a few. This...

Even Gaara was troubled by the sheer number. He was about to use more sand, but before he could act, the rabbits vanished into shadows again in the blink of an eye, leaving others stunned.

"They're gone..."

Gaara narrowed his eyes. He now just wanted to kill them, but to his confusion, he couldn't see them anywhere and couldn't find any tracks.

Rabbits are good for many things but not for direct head-on fighting. They are intended to be used when one needs to escape. They distract the enemy until the caster can get away.

Right now, I was on top of Nue, which I summoned right after the rabbits to escape from there. Gaara is strong, but even he can't chase me in the air.

Karin was with me, staring but not saying anything.
