Shiller had only ever seen one type of otter, and that was the small-clawed Asian otter he saw in a zoo in Asia in his previous life, which was quite cute. But the one in front of him clearly was not; this one was much larger than the small-clawed Asian otter.
Its fur was also much longer than that of a normal otter, displaying a mix of dark brown and light brown. If it weren't possible to see the mechanical structures inside its body through its skin, one would think it was just a regular otter.
But there was no doubt, this creature was most likely Rocket Raccoon's old lover, Laira because the mechanical structures inside her were very similar to those of Rocket Raccoon. It was clearly the work of the same lab.
In the original work, Laira was actually a swindler, who had deceived Rocket several times, fooling him financially, emotionally, and romantically. But even so, Rocket still had some unresolved feelings for her.
From what Shiller learned from the Rocket Raccoon of their universe, although this universe's Laira wasn't exactly a good person… or good otter, and she had also deceived Rocket, it seemed she had her reasons for doing so. Rocket's feelings for her weren't just unresolved, they were passionately burning.
There must be a reason for this otter's presence here, and the worst possibility was that she was the poisoner. If they just handed this creature over to the Mutants, and if Magneto lost his temper and decided to eliminate the problem, wouldn't it break Rocket Raccoon's heart?
Moreover, Shiller felt there was more to the story. From what Shiller learned from Rocket Raccoon, Laira was a very clever otter and also a formidable bounty hunter. She wouldn't have gotten involved with the Mutant mess without a reason.
Doing so would be no different from slapping Odin in the face in the Fairy Palace. At least Odin might leave her body intact, but Magneto had no morals. You need to be alive to spend money.
Shiller examined the otter's body structure and discovered she wasn't injured. This meant she probably wasn't lying here by accident, but rather deliberately because if even Shiller couldn't detect her vital signs, the Mutants probably wouldn't be able to find her either. This might have been her way of protecting herself.
But now that Shiller had found her, he couldn't just do nothing. They couldn't just hand her over to the Mutants, so why not bring her back to Earth for Rocket to handle? Perhaps leveraging their old friendship, they could clarify what was really going on.
Shiller carefully checked Laira the otter's physical condition to ensure she wasn't carrying anything strange. Then, he transported her through the dimensional gateway using the Gray Mist, and returned to the Temple of Eternity.
By then, Dream Power Doctor Strange had finished his talk with Eternity. Shiller wasn't particularly interested in what they had discussed, and Dream Power Doctor Strange didn't seem inclined to share, but it seemed that building the Dream Bureau required his presence in this universe for some time, so he returned to Earth with Shiller.
After arriving back on Earth, the group had already returned to Shiller's farm. Those who needed to sleep caught up on sleep, some went golfing, some went fishing, and Shiller found Rocket Raccoon running around wildly with Helen in the farm's furrows.
He pulled Rocket Raccoon aside and brought out the unresponsive otter, Laira, laying her in front of Rocket and explained where he had found Laira.
He had expected Rocket Raccoon to be shocked, but Rocket seemed more reflective than surprised.
"You didn't know anything in advance, did you?" Shiller asked.
Rocket shook his head and said, "No, but recently, Laira suddenly sent me a message..."
"She sent you a message, so the two of you have been in touch? How do you contact each other?"
"Star System Shake." Rocket Raccoon looked at Shiller as if he were a primitive human, saying, "That day, we happened to be on a mission in the same star system, we were relatively close, and we just shook the other out."
Shiller was speechless. This coincidental reunion was quite a romantic love story, but why they had shaken each other was a question for another time.
"So, you two started an online romance?"
"I wouldn't call it an online romance," Rocket Raccoon shook his head and said, "Just occasional chats. I haven't forgotten what she did to me initially."
"What message did she send you then?"
Rocket Raccoon sighed and said, "You may not know this, but Half-World has all kinds of races, yet animals are the lowest tier. I was fortunate because I became a little girl's pet, and that girl had some special status. The doctor who treated us was also very kind, so I was rarely bullied, and I've always been grateful to them."
"Laira is different though, she was from the same batch of experimental animals as me, but it seems there was a problem right after the experiment was completed. She scratched some medical staff and was locked up for a long time. After she got out, no one wanted anything to do with her, and she often had to scavenge for food."
"My young mistress was very kind and often secretly threw her something to eat. When this was discovered, the doctor strictly forbade her from approaching this dangerous otter, so she asked me to quietly bring food to Laira."
"Wait, she's a mechanical otter, right? Does she need to eat?"
"Don't I need to eat too? Although we can last longer without food than humans and can also recharge or refuel, we do have digestive organs. We can replenish our energy from ordinary carbon-based food."
"Although digesting food is the least efficient method, food is actually the easiest to obtain. If she couldn't even get food, where would she get more sophisticated energy sources?"
