The sound of swallowing saliva was deafening as Eddie shakily moved his feet down, only managing to descend a meter despite quite some time.
He kept his eyes tightly shut, brow furrowed in fear, not daring to look down, but his mind was telling him that he was too slow, there was no place that zombies wouldn't eventually reach.
Eddie took several deep breaths to steady himself, quickening his descent. Under a full moon, his small shadow resembled drops of water falling from melting ice cones, slowly sliding down.
"Do you want to know how high your heart rate is right now?"
Venom's voice appeared so unexpectedly that Eddie's hand clenched. Baring his teeth, he roared, "Don't suddenly speak up! Are you trying to scare me to death?"
"You already seem scared to death." Venom's voice lacked its usual sarcastic tone, instead sounding somewhat hesitant as he added, "Tachycardia, muscle twitching, rapid breathing, even signs of nervous disorder. You wouldn't let me leap down from the tall building with you, but you're nearly scaring yourself to death during the process of descending."
"The progress is going smoothly." Eddie tried to control the tremble in his voice, "I'm descending faster and faster. In seven or eight minutes at most, I'll reach the ground."
After speaking, he ignored Venom, maintaining a safe grip on the safety belt, steadily retreating step by step.
The situation was indeed improving. Perhaps it was the infinite potential humans could exhibit in dire situations, or maybe it was that the fear lessened considerably when he walked backward and did not look down.
Eddie once again gathered the courage to glance down through the gap between his feet. He was now in the midway between the fifth and sixth floor. The process was going much faster than he had anticipated, perhaps five more minutes and he'd be back on the ground.
Thinking about it, Eddie exhaled in relief, and the dizziness induced by acrophobia slightly receded.
However, as he continued to descend with his safety belt, he noticed an itch on both his hands. Looking up, Eddie saw something black on the back of his hands.
He lifted one hand, and the black things fell onto its original position. He moved the lifted hand to grab a lower point, while he lifted the other hand. He descended two steps.
Yet, there were black things appearing on the back of his hands again. Eddie reckoned it to be the shadows cast by the moonlight, but he didn't know what casted these shadows. So in the process of switching hands, he touched the black things with the free hand.
It was human hair.
Eddie incredulously looked up to see a ghostly woman with empty eyes and streaming blood crouching on the safety rope, making eye contact with him. Tips of her black hair fell on the back of his hands.
"Ahhhhhhhh!"
Eddie could not control his terrified screams.
Many famous Japanese ghost movies had made their rounds throughout Europe and America, becoming childhood nightmares for many Americans. Unfortunately, Eddie was among those who were spooked. He once had nightmares for a week due to Kayako.
What's more horrifying was that the ghostly woman crawled downwards headfirst while clutching his safety belt, getting closer to Eddie each second.
Panicking, Eddie quickly switched hands to descend at the fastest speed possible. In his panic, he couldn't find the courage to look below after a few meters like before, nor could he accurately judge the direction of his efforts.
The final result was Eddie going too far off course and missing a step at a fifth-floor window. He fell straight down.
Thankfully, Eddie had estimated the approximate height of the eighth floor before starting and tied the safety belt at a length less than that, wrapping around his chest, waist, and hips to avoid sudden falls.
The safety vest made out of the fire safety belt had a huge role. Although the impact from the fall was still considerable, fortunately, the safety belt was quite resilient, and Eddie's fall was reduced to an equivalent of bungee jumping from the fifth floor.
Although it was a tremendous shock for someone with acrophobia, thankfully, his body was unharmed.
The moment Eddie was held by the safety belt, he didn't even have time to think about fear, his heart was filled with nothing but relief.
Thank goodness that he had vaguely remembered the structure of the safety harness the workers wore when cleaning the glass curtain walls from his time working at the news agency.
If he had followed through like shown in the TV shows by tying the safety belt around his waist only, he might've ruptly killed himself from the impact of falling.
He felt over his body, finding no major harm, but he realized that he had incorrectly estimated the distance between floors. The knots were a bit higher than they should be, and now he was dangling beneath the second-floor window, still a considerable distance to the ground.
Eddie calculated, figuring out that he could continue to descend if he untied part of the safety vest. Hence, he began to undo the safety belt tied around him. But right then, he heard rustling noises from the ground.
Looking down, Eddie saw two zombies staggering his way.
Thinking back to his terrifying scream earlier, it seemed that it was indeed similar to the settings in zombie films. Zombies were attracted by noise. But what was different was that the zombies in this cosmos were a lot faster. They had hurried over from two blocks away in less than a minute.
With zombies closing in fast, Eddie was in a difficult position. If he went up, the ghostly woman on the building was watching him with predatory eyes. If he jumped down, Eddie was unsure if he could outrun the zombies.
With a determined heart, Eddie pushed his arms outward, grabbing onto the edge of the window on the second floor. He summoned every ounce of strength to lift himself, hoisting his knees onto the window ledge and collapsing onto it.
He pulled the keys from his pocket, clenching them tightly in his hand as he furiously smashed at the corner of the window. At this moment, he couldn't afford to think about whether he would attract zombies inside the building. The two unfortunate creatures beneath his feet were priming themselves to jump.
With a loud crash, the glass shattered. Eddie charged headlong into the room.
Fortunately, the two taller zombies outside did not seem to make good use of their arms. Despite jumping high, they couldn't hold onto the window ledge, failing to follow Eddie inside.
Just as Eddie heaved a sigh of relief, he saw a spider crawl out of the medicine cabinet at the other end of the room.
It generally looked like an ordinary spider, except for the problem that it was as tall as a man.
