Let's get to work

Exactly 30 minutes later, both the nephew and uncle duo met up at the front porch, ready to go.

They got into the car and rolled out onto the streets, driving out of the neighbourhood into the bustling street of the city.

Abe looked out the window the whole drive, he didn't get a chance to see the beauty of the city the other night, with his uncle explaining to him the history of the city.

He saw different people in their respective cars, rushing off to work or God knows where.

“So, before we get there, let's have a little talk." John's said, drawing Abe's attention

“The company I work for was contracted to build a cinema, and we've been at it for a year. We're almost done with the building, then the roofing company comes in. You get paid at the end of the day, 15 Bants per hour. The workers clock in at 10am and clock out by 6pm everyday but you don't have to, you come with me to the construction site, if you work then you'll surely get paid. We have at most a month left, the money you earn should be able to sustain you for a little while till I find you a better job. Do you understand?” His uncle asked

"Yes.” Abe replied,

" Are you sure?” John asked again

" Yes I am. Jesus!! I've already done the maths, and I've already made up my mind. I'll rather do this than wait for you at the house while you go to work and put food on the table while I do nothing.”

" Okay, just wanted to be extra sure.” His uncle replied.

Abe resumed his sight seeing, he was clearly enjoying the view or he was passing time, whatever he was doing was only known to him.

The car came to a stop in front of a red light signal waiting patiently.

From the rear view mirror, Abe saw five people wearing black outfits riding black bikes, driving past them into the other street completely disregarding the traffic.

If it were Z-city where Abe came from, they would definitely be punished. Even getting beautiful middle fingers for the people.

“That's how those f—--s babave,” his uncle's voice drew his attention away from the scene

“Who?" Abe asked

“The black skull gangs" his uncle said as he continued driving

“They do this all the time, they don't obey rules. Even during this unfavourable time for them, they will always show off. Bastards!!” John spatted.

" I'll get used to it someday. “ Abe replied

" Yeah you would.” His uncle said

Soon enough, they arrived at their destination.

His uncle pulled into a restaurant's parking space.

“Are we getting takeouts?" Abe asked as they got out of the car

“No, we eat breakfast here then we move to the construction site." John said pointing to the opposite side of the street

“Oh why park here then?" Abe asked confusingly

“No space over there, and I won't risk parking my car by the side of the road in this city. For now, we're borrowing this parking space, and by borrowing I mean we pay them to park here.” His uncle explained

They walked into the restaurant and found a space to sit, his uncle called a waiter over who jotted down his orders, then he turned to Abe

“What would you like?" His uncle asked?

“Anything light is fine." Abe replied

" Your food will be ready shortly.” The waitress said before leaving.

They sat in silence as they waited for their food.

Abe was looking across the street at the construction site as people were getting ready to work.

“Yep! This is my life now." Abe thought

His thoughts were interrupted when a man shouted “Oh happy day" on entering the restaurant

" Shut the hell up Gary!” His uncle shouted before turning to Abe

“That's Gary, he's a friend and he also works with me, we both work for the same company. We've been on so many projects together and he's well respected among the workers." His uncle explained.

" Oh John, I didn't see you there.” Gary said laughing

" Yeah you didn't.” John snickered

Gary came closer to their table,"This is your new boyfriend?” He asked

" Shut the hell up Gary! Why do you always try to embarrass yourself?”

“No, I'm embarrassing you." Gary laughed, slapping John's shoulder.

He took a seat beside John, and he also called the waitress over to order.

“Your food will be ready shortly sir." The waitress said to him before leaving

“Thank you love" Gary said,

“So John, does your boyfriend have a name?"

“Jesus!! Gary, this is my nephew." John replied shaking his head

“You have a nephew? You never mentioned it." Gary asked

“Well hello young man, sorry for embarrassing your uncle like that, hope you don't mind?" He said as he stretched his hand to Abe for a hand shake

“No, not at all, I'm Abe." Abe replied

“Good, I'm Gary McPherson, welcome to Hero city." Gary replied

“How's your wife Gary?" John asked with a smirk

“She still hates my guts, she won't stop bickering about that one time I cheated." Gary replied with a sigh.

“You had s-x with her parents' maid in the kitchen, on Thanksgiving and you expect her to just magically forget? Honestly, why are you guys still married?"

“She thinks separating like that will be bad for the kids. But honestly her staying is bad for me, my ears will stop working if i listen to her bickering one more time, I'm too old for that.”

" You should get yourself one John, a nice bickering woman.” He said

" Hell no, a hard pass on that one Gary.” John replied, earning another laugh from Gary.

" So you brought him to work.” Gary asked after calming down from his laughter

" Yes he wants to work as a labourer for the time being, he doesn't want to be idle.

He is a hard working one.” John replied

" Yeah, then he's in good hands. Listen kid, you need anything, you come to me.”

" I will sir, thank you.” Abe replied

Soon their food arrived, Abe mostly kept to himself, while Gary teased John from time to time.

After they were done with their food, they stood up to leave, not before Gary dropped the money for the meal, under his plate.

" This one's on me.” He pushing John's wallet down

“ You sneaky bastard, next round?" John said

" Next round.” Gary laughed

" Let's get to work then.”
