Audacity

A few days later, Max noticed a subtle unease in Blink's demeanor, disrupting her usual concentration. Sensing her distraction, he gently inquired, "Is something on your mind?"

Blink initially denied any concerns but eventually confessed, "I want to undertake a special task."

Concern etched on his face, Max questioned her decision, to which Blink assured him, "Even if it's risky, I can easily escape using my ability."

Calculating the timeframe, Max asked, "How long do you anticipate it will take?"

Blink replied confidently, "Three days at most."

"Take care," Max advised, genuine concern evident in his tone, before Blink vanished through a portal, determined to embark on her mission.

Turning his attention to Lauren, Max asked, "What about you? Planning to continue training or take a break?"

After a moment of contemplation, Lauren expressed a desire to go shopping, craving a taste of ordinary teenage life amidst their extraordinary circumstances.

Understanding her need for normalcy, Max readily agreed, suggesting, "Rest is important. And maybe treat yourself to some beautiful clothes."

Handing Lauren a substantial sum of money, Max accompanied her into town, unfazed by their status as wanted criminals. Setting up a tracking door for her safety, he entrusted Lauren to assess any potential threats from SSS personnel and ensure her own well-being.

Despite the risks, Max remained confident in Lauren's abilities, allowing her the freedom to explore independently while he kept a watchful eye from afar.

Max, exuding an air of calm assurance, displayed unwavering confidence in Lauren's ability to handle potential threats, allowing her to navigate the bustling streets independently.

As Lauren set off on her excursion, Max found himself adrift in the unfamiliar territory of shopping. Wandering aimlessly, he stumbled upon a quaint coffee shop, its inviting ambiance drawing him in. Seated by the window, he indulged in a moment of serenity, relishing the comforting warmth of his coffee.

However, his tranquility was interrupted by murmured whispers from a nearby table. Intrigued, Max glanced over, only to be met with sudden silence as the patrons averted their gaze, likely recognizing him from his televised appearances. Undeterred by their apprehension, Max remained composed, unfazed by the undercurrent of anticipation surrounding him.

Before long, a fleet of unmarked cars arrived outside the shop, signaling the arrival of an unexpected group. Unlike the anticipated government vehicles, these cars belonged to no specific agency, their occupants clad in ominous black attire adorned with distinctive white cross patterns. Over twenty individuals disembarked, their gaze fixed on Max through the window, their intentions clear.

Despite the mounting tension, Max maintained his composure, calmly assessing the situation while continuing to sip his coffee.

Ignoring the commotion brewing outside, Max remained unruffled as he casually placed his coffee cup on the table, tossed some coins beside it, and elegantly stood up. The cafe was now encircled by a group of individuals dressed in black, drawing the curious glances of bystanders observing from a distance.

A rugged, bearded man, emanating hostility, confronted Max with a sneer. "Hey, freak, this ain't your turf."

Max narrowed his eyes, unfazed. "Oh, really? And who made you the welcoming committee?"

"We call the shots around here. Mutants like you ain't welcome," the bearded man spat, his tone dripping with contempt.

"We're the scavengers!" the group chimed in unison, their voices tinged with aggression.

As the tension thickened, a wave of murmurs rippled through the crowd, culminating in a cacophony of disapproval aimed at Max. Hostile stares bore into him, but instead of cowering, Max met their gaze with a sly grin. "Scavengers, huh?"

An ordinary mutant might have succumbed to fear in such a situation, but not Max. These self-proclaimed scavengers had underestimated their target. Max's smirk grew wider as he sized up his adversaries. "If I don't leave..."

"Then you'll regret it!"

"Regret it!"

The scavengers roared in unison, their voices echoing through the air like a threatening thunderstorm.

Max chuckled dismissively. "Regret? Who gave you lot the authority to decide my fate? Get lost, you bunch of losers, if you value your sorry asses."

Max's disdain was palpable, stoking the flames of their fury. How dare these mutants try to intimidate him? Their arrogance was almost laughable. One of them, unable to contain his rage, lunged forward, and his comrades followed suit, brimming with hostility. Max sneered as the formidable group closed in.

It would be a shame not to teach them a lesson in humility!

With lightning speed, Max struck first, delivering a powerful blow to his nearest adversary. Blood sprayed, and the man collapsed, lifeless.

Caught off guard by Max's swift retaliation, the scavengers hesitated for a moment before launching into a frenzied attack, fueled by rage and desperation.
